Global Recognition During the 2021-2022 academic year, five (5) students from the Department of Government represented The UWI Mona at the Virtual Model Organization of American States (OAS) for the English-Speaking Caribbean and Historically Black Universities. Of the five (5) students, Ms. Ashera Barron received an award for Best Alternate Delegate Speech. Advocacy Mr. David Salmon, Jamaica’s youngest commissioner of the Early Childhood Commission (ECC) and one of the Department of Government’s public representatives and undergraduate student, successfully campaigned for the Governor General to declare 2022 the Year of Early Childhood Development.
our scholarship athletes competed at the Premier League levels in different clubs. The female and male volleyball teams emerged champions in the Intercol tournament, and the female club team won the club tournament held in April. The participation of UWI was primarily due to voluntary service from club members. Scholarship athlete Amanda Pinkney, was also selected for the national netball team. The Track and Field team participated in several development meets, Intercollegiate Championships, Penn Relays, and National Trials throughout the season. The male team finished 2nd place in the Intercollegiate competitions. Student athlete Noel Ellis secured a win at the Sagicor Sigma 5K. Tertiary Education The Mona Social Services/UWI Community Film Project (MSS/UWICFP) welcomed six new UWI Township Scholars for the 2021-2022 academic year, all of whom completed the year successfully. The year’s cohort increased the number of scholars invested in The UWI to over 100, and over 50% graduated. The graduates achieved 6 First Class Honours, 31 Second Class, and 4 Pass Degrees. Two of the six scholars were among four additional scholars who successfully completed their undergraduate programmes and graduated in November 2022. All of the Township Scholars this year were awarded Second Class Degrees-Upper Division.

1.7 OUTREACH Student-led Initiatives

International Coastal Clean-Up The UWI One Life, a student-focused organisation which targets vulnerable groups in Jamaica and regionally, joined with the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) on Saturday, November 6, 2021, for the International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) Jamaica 2021. The event was held under the theme “Keep trash in the bin and not in the ocean” and the clean- up site was the Port Royal Beach. The event was a success. Persons in attendance completed 3 volunteer cards, and 1 coordinator card was emailed to JET consisting of all items collected and their respective tallies. Breast Cancer Donation (Western Jamaica Campus) On October 15, 2022, the Hall Committee at the Western Jamaica Campus hosted a fundraising activity (cake sale) to raise funds to assist with medical treatment for a breast cancer patient. The cake sale was profitable and the students were able to raise the amount of J$44,641.00. The students did a helium balloon release following the event, to remember those who had lost the fight with Breast Cancer.
1.6 STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS
Prime Minister’s Youth Award for Excellence Mr. Jordon Freeman, PhD student at the Biotechnology Centre, received the Prime Minister Youth Awards for Excellence for 2021 in the area of Innovation in Science and Technology. His innovation uses biological metabolites to produce organometals known for antiviral and antimicrobial properties. Sports The Campus-related sporting activities remained very low-keyed due to budgetary cuts. The UWI Mona emerged champions of the 2021-2022 Intercollegiate T20 Cricket Competition and one of the cricketers was selected for the Jamaica Scorpions. Despite the Campus not hiring a football coach, the students competed at Intercollegiate football and earned a 4th place position. Four of
