Thinking Matters

The Design and Technology department is committed to encouraging boys to think more widely about design than simply what is covered in the classroom. The activities, societies, clubs and workshop sessions we run broaden boys’ understanding of Design and Technology and we enter design–related competitions and take the boys on many trips.

‘A fascinating day out and amazing to see the automated production methods.’ Paddy Wilson, Year 11

Over the first four days of the October half term, the department took a group of A–level pupils to Prague. We took in some famous sights such as the Charles Bridge, Wenceslas Square, Astronomical Clock, and the John Lennon Wall. Each day was packed with interesting visits that took in a real mix of traditional and modern design and manufacturing techniques. Of these, arguably the most impressive day involved visiting the world famous yet very traditional Bohemia Crystal factory, which contrasted against the state-of-the-art Skoda car plant and car gallery.

Boys were treated to spectacular displays at the Skoda factory.

We also had the opportunity to visit the Museum of Decorative Arts, Tram Car Museum and National Technical Museum, all of which helped to make topics covered through the A-level course more relevant. A group of Year 10 pupils participated in a competition in the Michaelmas term, in collaboration with the Design Museum. The brief of this year’s project was to come up with an idea under the theme of ‘Handy’ and present it to the Design Museum. As part of the launch of the competition, 30 boys went to the museum for a day to have an interactive workshop
