The interest in Computing Science has flourished at the College, with two highly active societies now taking place each week.

The Lower School Programming Society attracts around 25 boys a week who program their own creations using Scratch – a visual introduction to coding developed by MIT. An equally popular meeting for Middle and Upper School boys takes place on Tuesdays, where applications are written in a variety of programming languages including Python and Visual Basic. Developing mobile apps is also becoming more popular with the boys writing cross-platform applications using programs such as AppShed. The Programming Society tie is awarded for those showing particular aptitude and dedication throughout the year and has become a highly sought–after prize. We continue to enter national competitions with considerable success. Recent highlights have been strong performances in the Informatics Olympiad, as well as great success in the PA Raspberry Pi

competition, where our entry to design a method to encrypt data safely using two Pi machines reached the national final. ‘One of the goals of the programming society is to encourage cooperation with students who have creative ideas in different computer programmes, helping them to implement and improve their ideas. The society seeks to engage students with different aspects of computer science and to develop programming and problem- solving skills within a team environment.’ Faraz Taheri, Year 12 Next year boys will be entering code-cracking, robotics and animation competitions. Finally, opportunities to program are becoming ever more prevalent thoughout all subjects and every boy will have the opportunity to learn what is becoming a key skill during his time at the College.
