Thinking Matters

‘The trainer showed us how much it takes to be an elite athlete and the amount of training they have to put in on a daily basis; it made me reflect on my own training and whether it was enough to advance me as an athlete or if more work is required.’ Akil Greenidge, Year 12 Boys also have a chance to develop their ability to support the non-playing side of sport. ‘The opportunity provided by the College for me to partake in a refereeing course was extremely beneficial for myself for many reasons. First, it enabled me to gain my level 2 refereeing badge, which meant that I could referee junior matches inside and outside of school, which I did on a number of occasions. Second, it helped out hugely with my PE coursework, as a large piece of it was based around my experiences as a referee. Lastly, as someone who takes part in a lot of sports and enjoys it very much, I think that it is a great thing to learn and it also makes you view certain sports from a whole new perspective. The course also provides an opportunity for those people who would prefer not to physically play certain sports but who would still want to be involved in them in some way.’ Cameron Kelly, Year 12

On top of the curriculum, we want boys to experience different aspects of the world of sport beyond school, in which many of them will hope to play or work. The idea is to see theory put into a practical context, and so to go one step further in awareness and understanding, with real examples experienced first-hand. All our A–level pupils take part in an annual overnight field trip to St George’s Park, the National Football Centre. Its educational liaison department designed a programme with the Michael Johnson Performance Centre based at Loughborough University, taking the boys to its state-of-the-art fitness-testing laboratories, training facilities, lecture theatres, rehabilitation suites and hydrotherapy pools. ‘The St. George’s PE trip was extremely beneficial for my A2 Physical Education course as it allowed us as athletes, coaches and students to see first-hand the benefits of rigorous short-term preparation with use of ergogenic aids and technological support. Additionally, we witnessed the importance of the recovery phase in an athlete’s routine and the positive impact it has on performance and the benefit of reducing the likelihood of injury. Working in an elite environment with top coaches was an inspiring experience and hugely benefited my understanding of the A-level PE course.’ Luke Connor, Year 13
