S aturday, September 19th is no doubt a day the Mayville State University Comet Football Team family will never forget. The Good-one of the greatest comebacks in MSU Comet Football History. The Bad-a great young man left fighting for his life. I watched our starting Quarterback Matt Donovan get up and walk-off the field post a bit of an awkward hit, but, not alarming by any means. The minutes that followed however, full of alarm. Ambulance and later a life-flight, Matt was literally in for the fight of his life. What was a great win was tempered by a great deal of uncertainty regarding one of our own. Most that follow Brock or I on Social Media are at least aware of this. #PlayFor3 has become part of every tagline and post since that day. When it came time to consider how we could help, I was thinking of ways to meld what we do at JSF with something that was Brock’s...and had an idea...work in a donation flush Lot on our newest donor female, PLC Lady in Roan. Before he made that last bull delivery run West last June, I told him -”When you get to Zane’s, see what the Horned Jaxson daughter has for a calf at side...and if you’re a better negotiator than me, maybe you can bring her home...” with a wink. Shortly after he started the tour at Zane Martin’s Promise Land Cattle Ranch, just outside Fishtail, MT, I received the following text: I’m not coming back from Montana without that cow.
If you know my son, he may be almost as determined as his Dad!
A maternal half sib to Old School Cool, that old cow was burned in my brain after years of visits there. So powerful, yet feminine. Always had one of the top calves at side. Now coming 10 and didn’t look a day over 6. After some heavy negotiation and a little help from Dad, that pair was coming back to Kathryn...and all I’ll say is I’ve never spent more on a cow, ever. But I believed in her and what she offers the breed. Much like a lot of cattle with the PLC prefix, the breed needs them. She’s due approx. April 1, 2027 to JSF 150K. Around June 1, she will be ready to flush and we couldn’t be more excited. It’s not every day you have the ability to be in on the ground floor of a proven cow, and, do so for a great cause. We’ll guarantee 6 transferable embryos and offer semen on any of the bulls in our battery, including the upcoming studs selling in 2027, as well as the Shorthorn World Record Setter himself, JSF Outback 105N. 100% of the proceeds from this lot will go to Matt’s recovery fund. Let’s make it bring a pile! #PlayFor3.
