The new term “goblin mode” has entered the spirit of the times by embracing the comfortable option of spending the whole day in bed or eating over the kitchen sink because you can’t be bothered to put your food on a plate A re you still in bed (We know that you’re aboard a plane, but remember yesterday morning)? Are there piles of clothes and empty boxes of takeaway food strewn across the floor? Do you have crumbs on your sheets? Do you not even care? If so, you might already be in “goblin mode” – which was selected by the public as the 2022 Oxford Word of the Year. According to the publishers of the Oxford English Dictionary, this is a slang term that refers to “a way of behaving that intentionally and shamelessly gives in to and indulges in base habits and activities without regard for adhering to social norms or expectations”. Social media can portray ideal- ised versions of self-improvement, from waking at 5am to drink a green smoothie, to exercising until you drop dead, but that era may be com- ing to an end. Here to replace it is goblin mode – which signifies the opposite of trying to better your- self. The 2022 Oxford Word of the Year was chosen by the public for the first time. “Goblin mode” proved victorious, with “Metaverse” com- ing second and “#IStandWith” third. “Given the year we’ve just ex- perienced, ‘Goblin mode’ resonates with all of us who are feeling a little overwhelmed at this point. It’s a re- lief to acknowledge that we’re not al- ways the idealised, curated versions of ourselves that we’re encouraged to present on our Instagram and Tik- Tok feeds,” said Casper Grathwohl, president of Oxford Languages at Oxford University Press. The term was first coined in 2009, but only went viral on social
