It might be small and quaint, but Vrn- jačka Banja is nonetheless among Ser- bia’s most popular towns. People have been coming here to heal since Ro- man times, and there are no signs that they will stop anytime soon. This queen of spa tourism, as the town is informal- ly dubbed, has been renowned for its healing springs since ancient times. It was on this site that the Romans built the Fons Romanus medical spa and hot water spring. Best testifying to the repute of the waters of this spa in an- cient times are the numerous gold coins found in the area. Romans would throw contemporary coins into the wells. Apart from gold coins dating back to the period from the 2 nd to the 4 th centu- ry AD, the remains of an ancient swim- ming pool have also been found in this spa town. It was back in the 1830s that Prince Mi- loš Obrenović engaged geologists to conduct testing on the mineral waters here. They rated very highly, compara- ble in quality to the waters of the Czech spa town of Karlovy Vary. However, the spa still had to wait another 30 years to receive its modern development and thus become a very popular destination among the Serbian aristocracy. Vrnjačka Banja is located in Central Ser- bia’s Raška district, in the valley of the West Morava River, just 200 km from Belgrade and 25 km from Kraljevo. It is protected to the south, east and west by Goč mountain, while it is protect- ed from the north winds by the Gledić mountain range. There are seven ther- mal springs here, providing discerning visitors with plenty of choices, and the spa’s first doctor in modern history was the famous Josif Pančić. The hot waters here represent a unique source of min- eral water anywhere in world, as the wa- ter temperature is exactly the same as the average temperature of the human body: 36.5 0 C. Vrnjačka Banja’s miner- al-rich water belongs to the type of al- kaline carbon-acidic thermal water. je temperatura mineralne vode u Vrnjačkoj Banji, koliko iznosi i prosečna temperatura ljudskog tela The water temperature in Vrnjačka Banja is exactly the same as the average temperature of the human body: 36.5 0 C

Niš is a city that’s known throughout Serbia for its energetic atmosphere and absolutely unbeatable food, but lo-

cated just nine kilometres to the east of the city is one of the country’s most popular spa centres. The spa is locat- ed in the foothills of the Dry Mountain, which provides this idyllic scene with an additional element. Niška Banja is a tourist destination that’s awash with hot healing water springs that have been known since the time of the ancient Romans. It has since found its place in every subsequent epoch, combining its natural wealth with peo- ple’s lives. Niška Banja has long been known for its favourable qualities and as a centre of healing, and the spa itself still contains remains from that period, in the form of a Roman bathhouse with two pools richly decorated in mosaics. Also testifying to the claim that Niška Banja’s mineral-rich water has excep- tional healing qualities is the fact that water from the spa was supplied to the baths and swimming pools of ancient Mediana, the luxurious Roman imperi- al residence dating back to the time of Constantine the Great. During the Ot- toman period, Niška Banja was the pre- ferred resort of Sultan Suleiman. A moderate-continental climate and more than 70 hectares of forests have a placating effect and are also ex- tremely beneficial for treatment and re- covery. Niška Banja has five individual healing water springs that belong to the group of earth-alkaline homeotherms (temperature of 36-38°C), enriched with a high concentration of minerals. This spa town is surrounded by nu- merous sites of natural beauty, so you shouldn’t miss out on excursions to Sićevo Gorge, representing the can- yon of the River Nišava, and Jelašnica Gorge, which is classed as a special na- ture reserve.

Mineralna voda pripada vrsti alkalnih ugljeno-kiselih toplih voda.
