BELGRADE RIVER FEST
The legendary Bisera Veletanlić, famous Swed- ish band Dirty Loops and Israeli composer Kutiman are set to join this year’s Musicology Sessions con- cert series, which brings amazing musical events to Belgrade. Kutiman will present himself to the Belgrade audience for the first time with perfor- mances at the BitefArtCafe club on 31 st May and 1 st June. Known for his unique approach to music, which fuses traditional and contemporary sounds in unexpected ways, he is among the most ex- citing acts on today’s world music scene. We uti- lised the opportunity to talk with him prior to his ar- rival in Belgrade... What kind of role does technology play in your creative process, from initial idea to final prod- uct? “Technology has an important role to play, from the initial idea to the final product. I use a com- puter to record and edit music, which is already a technological process. However, with some pro- jects I prefer to play instruments in the traditional way and then only do the editing on the comput- er. Likewise, when I’m working on animations and visuals, I use advanced tools like 3D scanners and tracking cameras.” Which musicians have had the greatest infu- ence on you and your music? “That’s a really difficult question, but I’ll try to pro- vide a simpler answer by listing some of the musi- cians who I’ve found to be extremely inspiring: Jim- my Smith, Fela Kuti, James Brown, David Axelrod, John and Alice Coltrane and Terry Riley.” You moved to Tel Aviv during your student days. What was life in the city like back then and what was the music scene like compared to today? “Living in Tel Aviv in the early 2000s was consider- ably cheaper compared to today, which enabled greater creativity among the city’s residents, given that they spent less time thinking about the cost of living and rents. However, the internet wasn’t so developed back then, which resulted in a big- ger local music scene, which was simultaneous- ly both good and bad. I’m currently not complete- ly up to date with the situation on the Israeli scene, but from what I see, there are a lot of creative mu- sicians and bands making great music.” Musicology Sessions return to the city CONCERT
