I n these exciting (post)pan- demic times of ours, it has be- come evident that the hum- ble (and often overlooked) custom of drinking a cup of tea can create the kind of peaceful respite that today seems to us to be all too rare – and thus precious. Tea is an intimate luxury, a soupçon of peace that we steal from our otherwise busy day and a sim- ple way to restore balance. Perhaps, then, we shouldn’t be surprised at the renaissance of the poetic “tea- time” moment that’s emerged in the world’s most exciting megalopolis. Yes, what follows are the most be- loved stops on a tour of New York’s tea culture. Palm Court, Plaza Hotel If you were an avid fan of The Sopranos, you might recall how the pilot episode made mention of tea at the Plaza. This cult New York ho- tel is among the few places in the city where the tradition of sipping afternoon tea is on par with the Brit- ish custom, and yet it has that dis- tinct American atmosphere. The tea is accompanied by edible gold cook-
ies and dainty black caviar sandwich- es, with the option of pairing your tea with champagne. Té Company Guided by the notion that New York really lacks any places where si- lence reigns supreme, with the excep- tion of libraries, Elena Liao conceived (and realised) a West Village haven that will prove particularly appeal- ing to lovers of Oolong teas. With the recurrent theme “Tea is hidden in this town”, this venue is hidden away on a quiet street and, apart from its teas, is also popular for its Pine- apple Linzer cookies. Colbo This uniquely cool clothing shop and art gallery is located on Orchard Street on the Lower East Side – and is an unavoidable stop for the neigh- bourhood’s “hypebeast" crew, who visit to pick up their obligatory mat- cha latte and the odd batik pattern T-shirt. Dear Friend Books This unusual bookshop in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood
is organised in accordance with the seven chakras – and has devised a concordant offer of teas and kombu- cha. This venue’s Instagram account has just a single post: one that high- lights the soothing atmosphere that reigns here thanks to the minimal- ist décor and garden. Crown Heights Garden Club For genuine plant lovers, this spot in Brooklyn represents a veri- table heaven on earth and an oppor- tunity to find everything you need for gardening projects in one place – and you can stay for tea. You can also browse the many books dedi- cated to plants, flowers and nature, while you wait for your tea to cool. Kettl With locations in Greenpoint and the Bowery, and the widest se- lection of Japanese teas anywhere in the city, Kettl has established it- self as a favourite venue among tea connoisseurs. Filled with poetic pot- tery, Kettl is ready to expand to the west coast and is set to open its first L.A. venue soon.
