Sremac, Kalča and Čapa The monument at the start of Kopitareva Street (Kazandži- jsko sokače) is dedicated to late- 19 th century Serbian writer Stevan Sremac and his friend Kalča, who is also a character in Sremac’s fa- mous novel Ivko’s Feast. The mon- ument was erected on the site of the original house of Živko Mijalk- ović, aka Ivko the boss, a wealthy craftsman from Niš. Sremac came to the city from northern Serbia and was captivated by the direct- ness, humour and lifestyle of the people of Niš, particularly their di- alect. He liked to socialise with the “ordinary world” and found inspira- tion in the taverns and craft shops of Niš, where he was resident from 1879 to 1892. The bronze sculp- ture, which depicts the writer, the hunter Kalča and his dog Čapa, is the work of sculptor Ivan Felker. Adventures around Niš The area surrounding the city is a genuine mini paradise for vari- ous outdoor activities. The Jelašnica and Sićevac gorges are perfect plac- es to enjoy pristine nature! And if you’re not a fan of heights, you can head deep below the ground and visit the impressive Cerje Cave, lo- cated just 14 kilometres from Niš. This cave, which is two million years old and boasts rich decorations that seemingly defy gravity, has only been partially explored and is not open to visitors in full... Niška Banja Niš is also known for the nearby spa town of Niška Banja. Famous for its temperate climate, this spa has five mineral springs that car- ried water all the way to Mediana during the time of Constantine the Great. Located just 10 kilometres from Niš city centre, the spa can be reached by public transport, so don’t miss out on the chance to en- joy an oriental massage or choco- late spa treatments.
