This letter is written in response to an article in theMarch 15 edition of the Tribune-Express, quoting Ontario Conservative agriculture critic Ernie Hardeman who said that Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Ani- mals inspectors are not adequately trained to deal with complaints involving livestock. The Ontario SPCA Officer training pro- gram is known across the country as the most rigorous and in-depth Officer-training program for animal welfare officers in Can- ada. This training program includes courses on maintaining and enforcing legislation and animal care, including an extensive livestock component. St. John Ambulance First Aid and CPR training is also included.

Our goal is to work with the animal owner to ensure that the animal is getting the care it requires as outlined un- der the Ontario SPCA Act standards of care. The Society has great working relationships with animal commodity groups across On- tario, including the Ontario Dairy Farmers of Ontario and the Ontario Chicken Farmers of Ontario. As part of our standard investiga- tions practices, the Ontario SPCA will regu- larly consult with industry experts when is- suing orders for animal care or the removal of an animal from the property. Each of the Ontario SPCA Officers partici- pates in 40 hours of online learning spread out over four weeks and eight weeks of al- ternating in-class and ride-along training, before they are appointed as a Peace Offi- cer. This year an additional 2.5 days has been added. The entire program takes approxi- mately 12 and a half weeks to complete and Officers must receive 80 per cent in order to graduate. Approximately 20 per cent of our officer ride along training is designated specifically towards livestock. Our livestock training has been developed in tandem with the University of Guelph and the Ontario Ministry Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs. Our Officers are all trained
year. Of these 16,000, in 2011, 2,146 Orders were issued, 209 Provincial Charges were laid, 39 Criminal Charges were laid and 3,191 animals were removed as a result of an investigation. As stated earlier, our goal is to work with the owner to ensure the ani- mal gets the care it requires, these statistics support this statement. C’est le temps de sortir de sa coquille!
Après de longs mois d’hiver, Pâques marque souvent l’arrivée du beau temps et des tem- pératures plus clémentes. C’est d’ailleurs pourquoi la fin de semaine du congé pascal est l’occasion tout indiquée pour partir à la découverte des environs. En chemin pour aller visiter la famille et les amis, pourquoi ne pas planifier un petit arrêt dans l’un des nombreux attraits touristiques de la région?
En effet, plusieurs établissements offrent une programmation toute spéciale pour le congé de Pâques, comme les musées, les théâtres, les cabanes à sucre, les chocolateries et autres établissements d’artisanat, etc. Les amateurs de ski et de planche, quant à eux, aimeront sans doute passer quelques heu- res sur les pistes pour profiter des derniers moments avant que la neige ne tire sa révé- rence et qu’il soit venu le temps de ranger définitivement l’équipement jusqu’à l’hiver prochain. Autrement, plusieurs fermes ouvrent leurs portes afin que toute la famille puisse décou- vrir les animaux. Petits et grands pourront nourrir et caresser lapins, poussins, moutons, chèvres et autres adorables petites bêtes. Et si ce n’est pas vous qui vous déplacez à la ferme, c’est la ferme qui se déplace à vous! En effet, nombreux sont les centres commerciaux qui
accueillent une fermette afin de souligner cette belle fête qu’est Pâques. Ce sont là quelques idées pour profiter au maximum du congé pascal, mais il y en a tant d’autres. Inspiré comme vous l’êtes, gageons maintenant que le défi sera de trouver le temps de tout faire ce que vous venez d’inscrire sur votre liste, n’est-ce pas?
