DETROIT AREA EVENTS AND FESTIVITIES Ways to Give Back and Celebrate the Holiday Season During the holiday season, heartwarming events or eye-catching light displays are everywhere. Here are a few ways to enjoy the season with everything from volunteer opportunities to Santa Claus.

MITTENS FOR DETROIT When: Oct. 1–Jan. 31

A wonderful way to stay active with the whole family is heading to the Frankenmuth ice skating rink in Campus Martius Park. Set amidst downtown Detroit in the center of all the action, you and your family will be in awe of the views and setting. The rink is described as the premier family-friendly outdoor rink in Michigan, and in the region, and it’s open seven days a week and holidays now through the new year! Enjoy! Where: Red Oaks Waterpark, Madison Heights Enjoy 1,000 programmable elements and over 100,000 animated lights twinkling as you drive through this holiday light show. Watch the lights dance in sync to Christmas music from the warmth of your car along almost a mile of decorated thruway. Bring along some hot cocoa and nestle next to your loved ones for the perfect start to the holiday season. SANTA’S ROCK N LIGHTS When: Nov. 22– Dec. 31

Looking for a way to give back this holiday season? Mittens for Detroit, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that collects, purchases, and distributes mittens to people in our community each year around the holiday season. Since its inception, the organization has collected and distributed over a quarter-million pairs of mittens. You can help by donating your time, collecting mittens, or even attending one of their events. During what they call The Big Sort, hundreds of volunteers process mittens for pickup and distribution to a network of nearly 100 agencies, schools, shelters, veterans’ organizations, health facilities, and senior centers.
