Aujourd’hui, le conseil est arrivé à la conclusion que ce ne serait pas une bonne décision de poursuivre avec le changement de nom et que la Municipalité met fin au processus. » Lors de la consultation publique, certains citoyens s’étaient opposés au changement de nom, faisant remarquer que les fusions forcées de 2002 avaient causé leurs lots de problèmes avec la fusion du Village de Calu- met et du Canton de Grenville. Des citoyens avaient également déploré le fait que de nombreux changements de nomont eu lieu au fil des décennies et qu’un autre aurait été tout simplement superflu.
Après quelques mois de réflexion, la Municipalité de Grenville-sur-la-Rouge a finalement annoncé, le 14 juillet, qu’elle mettait fin au processus de changement de nom et que le nom de la municipalité allait demeurer le même. En février dernier, une consultation pu- blique pour tâter le pouls de sa population avait fait ressortir plusieurs points négatifs et une pétition signée par 500 citoyens s’oppo- sant au changement de nomavait également été déposée. Rappelons que c’est en décembre dernier que le conseil municipal avait passé une résolution pour faire la demande de chan- gement de nom au ministère des Affaires municipales, des Régions et de l’Occupa- tion du territoire, une première étape pour officiellement devenir la Municipalité de La Rouge. Drunk drivers wanders off An Ottawa man drove his car into a ditch and then walked away from the scene to sleep things off at a friend’s house. Police arrested Afton Rof Penny, 24, of Ottawa and charged him with impaired driving and driving with a blood-alcohol level exceeding 80 millimetres. The charges resulted from investigation of a late-night accident report July 11 in Alfred-Plantagenet Township.A Toyota Yaris was found in the ditch alongside the Concession Three road about half an hour before midnight.There was no one in the vehicle. Police later discovered the driver had walked away from the scene to a nearby friend’s house where he fell asleep. A talk with Penny led police to suspect he had been driving while impaired by alcohol. Penny’s case is scheduled for the Aug. 5 provincial court session in L’Orignal.
