They also note that the fake lottery/prize scam is now the second-most common marketing complaint recorded in OPP statistics on consumer fraud. It also ranks fourth-highest in total dollar loss. Police warn against giving any personal identity information to anyone over the phone, by mail, email or other method without making sure through legitimate sources that they are who they claim they are. Also, a legitimate lottery or other such contest does not require a processing fee from a prizewinner.

OPPwarn residents in the Five Counties re- gion to beware of any “too good to be true” emails or letters in the mail that appear to be surprise lottery wins or unexpected cheques. Police received a report about a senior citizen in North Dundas Township who received what appea- red to be a bank draft from Blue Cross. The phony cheque came with instructions for him to cash the cheque and then send back a finder’s fee. The attempted transaction failed and bank officials notified police about the fraud attempt against a

Drunk drivers wanders off An Ottawa man drove his car into a ditch and then walked away from the scene to sleep things off at a friend’s house. Police arrested Afton Rof Penny, 24, of Ottawa and charged him with impaired driving and driving with a blood-alcohol level exceeding 80 millimetres. The charges resulted from investigation of a late-night accident report July 11 in Alfred-Plantagenet Township.A Toyota Yaris was found in the ditch alongside the Concession Three road about half an hour before midnight. There was no one in the vehicle. Police later discovered the driver had walked away from the scene to a nearby friend’s house where he fell asleep. A talk with Penny led police to suspect he had been driving while impaired by alcohol. Penny’s case is scheduled for the Aug. 5 provincial court session in L’Orignal.

of County Roads 19 and 2. If approved, it will be the latest of several similar projects the company has set up in other parts of Eastern Ontario. «There’s a lot of activity in certain areas of Ontario for certain (alternate energy) tech- nology,» said Jan Kieran, EDF EN Canada spokesman, during an interview at the com- pany’s July 9 open house on the project at the Curran Community Centre. «We have a special feeling for EasternOntario. It’s where we’ve constructed all of our solar projects.» The provincial government has a Sep- tember 1 deadline for applications to the Ontario energy system’s alternative supply program. Companies in the «green energy» sector can propose small- and large-scale projects involving solar energy, wind, or biomass generation, and also small-scale hydroelectric setups. EDF EN Canada has been working on plans for its Pendleton project since 2011, first scouting potential sites and then acqui- ring the land for the project, following with meetings with officials for the township and the South Nation Conservation Authority, and also with neighbouring land owners. Last Thursday’s open house was the latest step in the company’s information and consultation process as part of its project development brief to present to the province. M ore than three dozen residents dropped in at the Community Centre to view infor- mation panels and talk with EDF ENCanada officials. Kieran said overall response to the

A Toronto company is burning the mid- night oil now tomake sure its proposal for a solar farmproject in Pendleton is ready to be presented to the provincial government for approval. EDF EN Canada Inc. wants to set up a 14-megawatt solar farm in the Pendleton area of Alfred-Plantagenet Township. The proposed solar farm would be located on a 140-acre property near the intersection

company’s proposal has been positive and he credits the company’s policy of trying to be a community partner with all of its solar energy projects. “We operate andmaintain our facilities,” he said, “we are active in the community. We are a neighbour. We have staff that mow the lawn and shovel the snow on site. We are in the community.” Kieran noted that what EDF EN Canada needs most from residents in the Pendle- ton, Curran and other areas adjacent to the proposed solar farm site is feedback. The company’s proposal includes plans for a “green screen” of trees and shrubbery native to the area surrounding the solar farm site as part of the viewscape plan to hide the array of panels from the view of people driving by. “It’s all still an open process,” Kieran said. “We are here to listen.”

Company officials are optimistic that they can present a proposal that will earn pro- vincial approval and add another alternate energy project with the EDF EN Canada label on the list of “green energy” sources for Ontario’s power grid. “We’re excited,” said Kieran. “It’s a busi- ness we know well, it’s a community we know well, and it’s a technology we know well. We think we can submit a winning proposal.” Residents and other interested indivi- duals or groups who were not able to attend the Curran open house can still present comments about the Pendleton solar farm project proposal. International Plowing Match Auctioneers’ Challenge Fast-talking auctioneers are being challenged to bring their talents to the 2015 Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry International Plowing Match (IPM) and Rural Expo in September. The rapid and rhythmic cadence of bid calling is a deeply engrained agricultural tradition and distinctive to the North American profes- sion, says local auctioneer and IPM volunteer Flora Dumouchel. “This is the first time an Auctioneers’ Challenge has ever been held at an IPM and we’re excited and proud to be able to make that happen right here in SDG.” Those who wish to register for the Auctio- neers’ Challenge can contact Ms Dumouchel at 613-537-2925 or floradumouchel@yahoo. ca. The IPM will provide all other items to be auctioned at the challenge. Three auctioneers of merit will be awarded a purse of $1000, $750 and $500. The event will take place at the IPM site on Thursday, September 24. The 2015 IPM will take place from September 22 to September 26 in Finch. - Diane Hunter Camping is more comfortable than one might think. It doesn’t have to mean being totally off the grid, or using an outhouse. Ontario’s parks have a lot to offer, including 300 comfort stations with hot showers, many of which offer laundry facilities. Wi-Fi is available at park visitor centres in Algonquin, Pinery, Killbear and Presqu’ile. There are over 330 provincial parks inOnta- rio, covering over eight million hectares— larger thanNova Scotia and Prince Edward Island combined. In 2014, Ontario’s provincial parks re- ceived more than 8.5 million visits from people around the world and brought in over $70million in revenue, which supported jobs and businesses across the province. “Ontario’s provincial parks offer somany options for people to enjoy themselves in style,” said Bill Mauro, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry. “If you’re new to camping, youmight want to ease into it with some of our great glamping tips.” Campers can enjoy Ontario’s great ou- tdoors in style this summer by mixing gla- mour with camping, or glamping. Withmore than 19,000 car camping sites, many with 15/30 amp electrical service, RVing is a great way to enjoy Ontario parks. Recreational vehicles are available for rent for those who don’t own one. Many of Ontario’s provincial parks also offer cabins, yurts and cottages. And for those who prefer camping in luxury, the Sandbanks Provincial Park’s Maple Rest Heritage House is a former family farmhouse that features four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, as well as a gas fire- place, screened porch and beautiful views of Lake Ontario.

», a soulignéMme Thibodeau.
