New inductees into the VCI Wall of Fame

Bucks until February 2004, when he became the head coach for the Japanese National Team until May of 2015. Mahon has also coached the Japanese national junior team since 2011. Mahon trained Yutaka Fukufuji, the first Japanese-born and trained player to ever appear in anNHL game, andHiroyuki Miura, the first Japanese player ever drafted to the NHL. In order to be nominated for the Wall of Fame, alumnis must have made significant contributions in their field of endeavour, or within their community, attained high honours in his or her field, made significant efforts in mentoring or training others in their field, been a member of a

volunteer organization or made significant contributions in their community, and distinguished themselves as an appropriate role model of outstanding character. The nominee must have three letters of recommendation outlining why they should be inducted to the wall of fame. Some notable past Wall of Famers include Steve Barton, NHL linesman and owner of the Steve Barton Hockey Academy, Valerie Allen, superintendent of programand special education for the Upper Canada District School Board, col. Normand Lalonde a now retired career military man who has served abroad with NATO and the United Nations (UN), and Allison Brock, music industry professional and seasoned broadcaster.

Each year, during the Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) graduation ceremony, the VCI Wall of Fame honours a fewnew inductees, and presents themwith a plaque to commemorate the occasion. This year’s Wall of Fame inductees are Dr. Judith LeRoy and Mark Mahan. Judith LeRoy graduated fromVCI in 1992 as an Ontario scholar with a 92.6 per cent overall average. In 1987, she won the Best all around Female Athlete of the Year . “I felt very honoured to be nominated and inducted into the Wall of Fame at VCI,” said LeRoy. “To be included in such an elite group of people who have already been honoured is very humbling.” LeRoy went on to the University of Waterloo, where she graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Science degree as a Doctor of Optometry in 1998. During her time at the University of Waterloo, LeRoy was the captain of the cross country running team, was named All Canadian on three occasions, and was named Female Athlete of the Year. She was also inducted into the University of Waterloo Sports Hall of Fame. LeRoy was the past Clinical Director associated with the Medical program in Victoria, B.C. and has instructed for University of Victoria Continuing Studies. She has also been involved with third world eye care work with TWECS (Third World Eye Care Society). LeRoy currently lives in Victoria with her family, and is part of a family eye care centre. MarkMahon graduated fromVCI in 1985. He continued his post-secondary education at Concordia University where he received a Bachelor’s of Commerce in 1989. After some time away from school, Mahon received an MBA fromRobert Kennedy College in 2002. Mahon was not available to accept the award during the ceremony. His brother Reid accepted the plaque fromSteve Barton in his place. Mahon played three seasons for the Concordia Stingers, and 11 seasons in Germany. Mahon was the assistant hockey coach at the University of Ottawa fromApril 2001 to July 2002. In August of that year, he became the head coach for the Nikko Ice

Dr. Judith LeRoy was nominated to be selected for the VCI Wall of Fame by Champlain Mayor Gary Barton. She accepted the award during the VCI graduation ceremony on June 25.
