INSPIRING MOTHERS

VIP Referral Patient of the Month!

SHVETA HOLANI- PATEL

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and if you’re like me, finding the right way to say thank you is challenging. Being a mom is an incredibly difficult job, and it’s one that deserves to be celebrated for more than one day a year. While I always strive to be a supportive son and husband, I think it’s important to acknowledge everything my mother and wife have given me. One of the greatest things my mother taught me is a good work ethic. As a single parent, she always strived to provide for us, working long, demanding hours. At times, she’d have up to three jobs in the medical field at once, helping patients in doctors’ offices and working for a blood drawing center, but her exhausting work enabled us to attend college. “These two mothers have done so much for our family that I couldn’t hope to fit it on one page.” Despite coming home tired in her scrubs every night, nothing kept our mother from being there for us. She still came to my sports games and my sister’s cheerleading rallies, and she made the time for family meals whenever her schedule allowed. Because of her sacrifices, I’m fortunate to have a job with predictable hours, but I never would have made it without her incredible example. Nowadays, my mother has been enjoying a well-earned retirement. Unfortunately, she broke her hip recently and is still going through the recovery process. Because

I’m a physical therapist, I know some of the best doctors in the region. She’s making great strides, and I know she’s getting the best care possible. Of course, no Mother’s Day article would be complete without mentioning my amazing wife. She and I have to work as a team to keep up with our kids’ busy sports schedules, especially this time of year. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner — ferrying our kids around town and sometimes even around the country is demanding, but my wife shares my passion for being at their games no matter what. Besides pulling off incredible scheduling miracles, my wife also keeps me grounded. I tend to try to do too much , which is a consequence of the work ethic I learned from my mother, so I’ll take on extra work or volunteer for things I don’t have time for. This is where my wife’s help comes in. Over the years, she’s worked hard to help me understand that I don’t have to do everything at once and that it’s better for me and my patients to direct my energy toward one thing at a time. These two mothers have done so much for our family that I couldn’t hope to fit it on one page. But looking back on their examples of hard work and focus, I can say without a doubt our clinic wouldn’t be what it is today without their influence. Here’s to all the inspiring mothers out there.

The best compliment we can receive is to have one of our patients refer a friend or family member to our practice. If you refer someone and we are able to take them as a patient, both you and the person who was referred

Thank You! will be entered to win a $25 gift card! It’s just our way of saying

Happy Mother’s Day!

Useful Kitchen Utensils Gone Awry

“Coming to Cornerstone Physical Therapy was a pleasant experience. It really helped with my TMJ. I no longer have any pain.” –Marion “Connie” M

We’ve all seen those commercials for kitchen utensils or items that claim to make our lives easier, while in fact, they do the exact opposite. Some of these products can be helpful for children or the elderly who might struggle with motor skills, but healthy adults can save a few bucks and some space in the utensils drawer by not purchasing these items. PIZZA CUTTING SHEARS: While it can be irritating to discover the pizza you ordered wasn’t cut through completely, there’s nothing wrong with using a regular pizza wheel to finish the job. The Pizza Cutting Shears may appear to save you time, but they ultimately take up so much space and are so clunky that you’re better off without them. ROLL ‘N’ POUR: This plastic rocking device can help young children or the elderly pour themselves a glass of milk from a heavy gallon. However, there’s nothing wrong with able-bodied people using a bit of muscle to achieve the same. CHEF’N PEEL’N ONION PEELER: While far from taking the tears away, this onion peeler allows you to cut through an onion’s outer layers and peel away the skin. Instead of spending $15 on this cutter, use one of your kitchen knives to get the exact same result. BUTTER SPREADERS: One of the most commonly commercialized products is better butter spreaders. Whether it’s the Fox Run Butter Spreader, One Click Stick Butter Cutter, or Butter Mill Butter Dispenser, using a butter knife is ultimately easier and won’t clog up your drawer space. FRUIT AND VEGGIE SLICERS: Cutting spherical or cylinder-shaped foods may be difficult, but cleaning out the spaces between the thin blades of these slicers can be even harder. Save your time and cash by using a kitchen knife. TWIRLING SPAGHETTI FORK: A fork that twirls your spaghetti? You bet! While this might be a fun utensil for kids to use, it’s far from useful in everyday spaghetti eating. If the size of the fork doesn’t make it difficult to eat, the noise certainly will. If you have one or more of these utensils in your kitchen drawer, don’t feel bad! A lot of us do. Every home has one of “those” drawers. But you can’t fault entrepreneurs for trying something a little out-of-the-ordinary, even if it didn’t work out.

“We love the team at Cornerstone PT. They are extremely helpful and make the experience fun for a middle schooler.” –Joseph B.

A LIGHT TOUCHWITH A BIG IMPACT

What to Expect From Laser Therapy

In past editions, we’ve talked a lot about how deep tissue laser therapy works to reduce pain and inflammation while boosting your cells’ natural ability to heal. But what is the actual treatment like? To help you know what to expect, here are some commonly asked questions we get from curious patients looking for effective pain relief. HOW DOES IT FEEL? The idea of having a laser “fired” at their bodies understandably makes some people nervous. But the truth is these therapeutic beams couldn’t hurt a fly. While the laser works to energize your cell’s mitochondria, you’ll experience a warm, soothing sensation at the point of contact and almost immediate pain relief. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? Because our Class IV laser delivers energy so efficiently, most treatments only take 5–10 minutes, depending on the ailment. By scheduling an appointment, you can be in and out of our clinic in

no time. Many begin to see long-term results in as little as three visits.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS? Unlike addiction-forming medications or invasive surgeries, there are no side effects to laser therapy treatment. This is one reason why we are such big fans of the option, and we’re not alone. The FDA specifically approved this cutting-edge form of therapy as an alternative to those more harmful means of pain treatment. If you have been hesitant to turn to pain killers or are looking for alternatives to surgery, we strongly suggest you look into laser therapy. DO I NEED A REFERRAL FROM MY DOCTOR? New Jersey is a “direct access” state, which means you can take charge of your own physical therapy needs. You are free to go to a clinic you trust when experiencing acute or chronic aches and pains. Whether you are recovering from a sports injury or living with painful conditions like arthritis, seeking

out a licensed physical therapist trained in laser therapy can be your fastest route to relief.

Not sure if laser therapy is right for you? Stop by our clinic and let us know the conditions you would like treated. At the very least, we can point you in the right direction to get the treatment you need.

How to Travel Sustainably

Go Green

GET OUT THERE WITH THESE ECO-TOURISM TIPS

Vacations can come with great expense, and not just for your bank account. According to a 2018 study published in Nature Climate Change, travel accounts for 8 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Cut through the greenwashing and do your part to lessen these emissions by traveling sustainably. TRAVEL GREEN When possible, trains, hybrid buses, and carpooling are great alternatives to larger, more environmentally intrusive travel methods. Large cruise liners are detrimental to oceans, and airplanes emit large amounts of toxins into the air. However, you can cruise and fly with the earth in mind. Some cruise lines are working to reduce their impact by installing more eco-friendly lighting and materials, and flight experts recommend using “green” airports, choosing fuel-efficient airlines, staying longer, and traveling less. If anything, it’s an excuse to extend your European vacation! STAY GREEN Where you stay impacts the environment as much as how you get there. Hotels use copious amounts of water for bathing and laundry, and they struggle to reduce energy because guests leave their lights and

televisions on. However, many luxury resorts, woodsy cabins, and even entire countries have opted to make eco-tourism easier. If you’re looking for a region of the world committed to preserving nature, look no further than Iceland, Finland, and Sweden, which are ranked the three most environmentally friendly places in the world. DO GREEN Man-made attractions like the Egyptian pyramids and Machu Picchu are some of the world’s greatest wonders, but Earth itself is pretty breathtaking. Check out natural attractions while hiking or camping in preserved forests, or soak up all the Caribbean has to offer by snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. When you’re mindful of your surroundings and remain unobtrusive, there are endless outdoor activities you can explore. Some locations even partner with environmentally conscious organizations you can donate to or volunteer with.

Opt for a green vacation and know that while you relax, the earth is getting a little relief too.
