Gymnast launches gold-medal performance

“Nick went out there and did every- thing we had talked about, and now he’s the champ,” said Grimard. “We’ll take a few weeks to relax, then sit down and talk about our plans for next year.” Another member of the Tumblers en- joyed time on the podium at the Easterns. Julie Anne Fiset marked her second time at the event, this time in the Level 5 Tyro class, one of the highest levels in the women’s competition. Fiset captured silver in both Bars and Beam, with a fourth-place scoring from judges for all-around competition. Her re- sults also helped Team Ontario earn an overall gold medal. “This was a good experience for Julie Anne this year,” said Coach Alina Florea, “and gave her more confidence and experi- ence for the future. For our , being an im- portant contributor to a team gold helps to further establish us as being a stronger club on the rise in Ontario. It’s a sign of things to come for us.” Justin Perry from Tumblers qualified for the Easterns also, the second time for him as part of Team Ontario at the champion- ships. He also earned a silver medal for all- around in the National Open category.

ST. JOHN’S NEWFOUNDLAND | Planning ahead paid off for Nicholas Duggan. The veteran member of the Tumblers Gymnastics Centre of Orléans leaped onto the podium at the Eastern Canadian Cham- pionships with a gold-medal result for Team Ontario in the men’s gymnastics competi- tion. Duggan took the all-around perfor- mance vote in the Level 4 13-and-over cat- egory in what his coach described as a close competition. “We had put together a game plan at the beginning of the year that would have him peak for this competition,” stated Coach Nick Grimard. “Leading up to the compe- tition, everything was looking good. We knew he had a chance at winning, but all the preparation in the world would mean nothing if he couldn’t execute on the day of the competition.” Coach Grimard noted that in the end Duggan won his event “by a far margin” and his performance helped Team Ontario win the overall gold for team competition.

PLANTAGENET | Brent Kelsey is enjoying a roaring start to his fourth season at the Mohawk International Raceway. The Plantagenet racer sped across the finish line last Friday night to celebrate his May long weekend with fourth-place out of a pack of 28 drivers at the start of the 20-lap run at the Hogansburg, New York car race centre. “We battled with the top three drivers for all 20 laps and at the finish line came home with fourth for a great way to start the season,” Kelsey stated. “We’re hoping to improve on that this Friday at the Mohawk International. We have raced there for the past three seasons and we have never fin- ished worse than fourth overall. We’re hop- ing to give a good fight for the number one spot.”

Brent Kelsey is back on the road again with his Number 30 decal bright and shiny on the race tracks in Cornwall Speedway and south of the border at the Mohawk International Raceway.
