THE BRIGHT SIDE

How We Made the Most of a Detoured Trip

In August, our trip to Florida took an unexpected turn when Hurricane Dorian threatened the state. The game we’d come all that way to see, Boise State vs. Florida State, was moved from Jacksonville to Tallahassee. With the kids in tow, we knew it would be too long of a haul to make it to Tallahassee, so we made the tough choice not to go to the game. It was disappointing not to see the game live, but instead of focusing on what we missed out on, we made the most of our trip. We took the kids to Disney World, and as you might remember from your own childhood experiences in the Magic Kingdom, they had a blast. Katie and I did too. We ended up watching the game on TV, and we cheered on BSU as they pulled ahead of the Seminoles to win the game. Our trip was a reminder that life doesn’t always go as planned. When Mother Nature, or anything beyond your control, takes over, you just go with the flow. It’s all you can do. While we were very relieved that Dorian missed Florida, that meant it did a lot of damage in the Bahamas. Our thoughts are with the people there as they work to recover and move on from this difficult time. Overall, we had a lot to be thankful for this summer. I’m grateful for everything we got to do with our kids and our extended family, from Florida to enjoying the Idaho outdoors on camping trips. Now, I’m excited for fall and all it entails: football, cooler weather, and spending more time with family. For our son Owen, fall is all about Halloween. I think it may be his favorite holiday. He’s already started planning our decorations, and he knows what he’s going to dress up as this year: the Grim Reaper. He’s 4, mind you. I think this kid gets what Halloween is about. At the office, I’m grateful that most of our renovations are done and that we get to enjoy all of the updates. We’ve had a lot of compliments and I have to agree with them — it looks great! The

office feels refreshed and new. If you haven’t been in yet, I’m excited for you to see it next time you’re here!

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Zoo Boise this summer for our patient appreciation. That was a fun time, wasn’t it? It looked like everyone was having a blast with the giraffes and goats. We love these opportunities to connect with our patients outside of the office and meet your awesome families. I can’t wait to see what we put together next year! Coming up in November, we’re hosting our sixth annual Free Day of Dentistry with Dentistry From The Heart on Nov. 8. We’ll have volunteers and partner offices all coming together to provide free dental care to anyone who needs it. Those who attend will have the choice of a cleaning or extraction, and it is first-come, first-serve. Please help us spread the word and let people know about this event. It’s something we look forward to every year, as we cherish the opportunity to help our community.

Have a great fall, and until next time,

Decorate Your House With Your Own Creations! FALL FAMILY FUN

FUN FINGER FOOD When you’ve got multiple friends and family members coming over and you need snacks, edible decorations are the way to go. You can get a little creative and make elaborate treats, or you can opt for delicious and easy-to-make finger foods with your kids. A good starting treat for your family is a batch of pumpkin Rice Krispie Treats. Add orange food coloring to the mix and get your kids to shape the treats like pumpkins before using a few pretzel sticks to make sturdy stems. THANKSGIVING CRAFTS Thanksgiving is only a month away, and your possibilities for holiday- themed crafts are endless with just a few supplies like paper, scissors, markers, and string. You can make turkey placemats, tissue paper trees, pumpkin garlands, paper pumpkins, or leaf mobiles to hang from the ceiling. Compile a list of ideas and have your kids pick out which craft they want to do first, then get to work together to create as many decorations as you want to display for Turkey Day.

The leaves are turning, the weather is changing, and the holidays are right around the corner, which means it’s time to bring out the fall decor! To make this season especially memorable for your family, create your own decorations with these fun ideas below.

PINE CONE PAINTING Go on a family walk through the park to pick up a few fallen pine cones or take a quick trip to the store to buy a bag. Once everyone has their own hand-picked pine cone, grab a paintbrush and a few colors and have at it! For extra flair, add some fixings like glitter, beads, sequins, string, and more. LEAF PAINTING Take a trip outside with the kids to pick out some large, unbroken leaves, then head back inside and get creative! You can pull out the construction paper and paint trees, using handprints and “arm prints” as the trunks and branches. Paint the leaves you found to spruce up your trees or use them as decorations on their own. You can also use them for leaf printing or leaf pressing.

With these engaging craft ideas, the whole family will be eager to make their own decorations and show them off for months to come!

NATIONAL DENTAL HYGIENE MONTH

4 Important Routines to Maintain

Sugar haunts us all during the Halloween season. From bags of chocolate at the grocery store to “borrowing” a few pieces of candy from your kids, temptation is everywhere. However, a sweet little treat now and then is okay, as long as you stay on top of your oral health. October is National Dental Hygiene Month, which is the perfect opportunity to talk about the importance of dental health and the best ways to keep teeth healthy and clean.

gum disease but also to prevent other health problems, like poorly controlled diabetes, strokes, and heart attacks. For 2019, National Dental Hygiene Month is focusing on the four routines that improve oral hygiene: brushing, flossing, rinsing, and chewing. • BRUSHING AND FLOSSING: These two routines go hand in hand. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing teeth twice every day and flossing once every day. By creating these habits, you decrease the risk of losing teeth when you’re older and limit the chances of developing other health problems. • RINSING: A toothbrush can’t clean every part of the mouth, which is why rinsing is crucial. After brushing your teeth, a good rinse will help remove any bacteria and biofilm you missed. • CHEWING: Another way to improve dental hygiene is to chew sugarless gum after each meal. Gum increases the amount of saliva in the mouth, which helps break down food. The best way to observe National Dental Hygiene Month is to incorporate better oral health into your daily habits, no matter how scary it may seem at first. Start these four routines today so you can trick-or-treat without guilt later.

THE GOAL FOR 2019 The goal of National Dental Hygiene Month is to spread

awareness about oral health. Oral health is vital, not only to prevent tooth decay, bad breath, and
