i n . T h e S e ttle d R o c k l ik e C h a r a c t e r (A cts 5:29) Although surrounded by the impla cable foes who had crucified Jesus, and well aware that they meant to deal with him in like manner, the new Peter was no longer afraid to own his Lord. With boldness and courage, he revealed that he had indeed become a “rock” by fearlessly declaring in the face of death and Imprisonment: “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29 R. V.). Points and Problems In the five separate passages pre sented for our lesson, there are to be found five steps in the development of Peter's mature Christian character. In one way or another, every individual must experience these steps before he will know the meaning of full Chris tian growth. They are as follows: 1. The step of acquaintance. "He brought him to Jesus" (John 1:42). No one can develop a Christlike charac ter until, first of all, he has come to know Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord. Being a Christian is a matter of personal relationship to Christ. There can be no substitute. 2. The step of confession. "Thou art the Christ" (Mark 8:29). Faith is strengthened by a clear, ringing testi mony concerning the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. The believer who would therefore grow strong in the Lord should seek occasions to wit ness to the Gospel of Christ. 3. The step of testing. "Peter went out, and wept bitterly" (Luke 22:62). In the midst of his trial, Peter failed miserably, but in the end, the Lord worked it out for His own glory so that in connection with his restoration Peter became a s t r o n g e r Christian than he ever was before. It requires the furnace of trial to show the Chris- tain how weak and how dependent upon the Lord he is. 4. The sfep of d e v o t i o n . "Thou knowest that I love thee" (John 21:17). Not until the believer can say with Zinzendorf, “I have but one passion; it is He and He alone,” is he fit for the largest service. 5. The step of consistent obedience. "We must obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29). When believers, who are citizens of Heaven, realize that in their life on earth they “must” obey God no matter what the conditions, they are well on their way to Chris tian maturity. In our day, there is not much diffi culty with civil authority, except on the mission field. But we often have f to choose whether we will obey God or family, friends and, sometimes, even religious authorities.
