4. "Which ministered unto him ol their substance" (Luke 8:3). The wom en referred to in this text illustrate a wonderful Gospel principle. After receiving deliverance from their mala dies, they showed their appreciation to Christ By ministering unto Hitn. That is always the proper order; first, salvation must be received, then the saved one has the blessed privilege of ministering unto Christ. The order can never be reversed. P eter T ries A g a in L u k e 22:54-62; J o h n 21:15 MEMORY VERSE: “God is mine help er” (Psa. 54:4). AFTER the Lord Jesus had been taken p r i s o n e r by His enemies and needed His friends more than ever, one of His dearest friends, Peter, failed Him. As the Saviour was led into the high priest’s house, “Peter followed afar off” (Luke 22:54). Be cause the night was cold, a fire was built in the hall. Peter joined some of Jesus’ enemies who were warming themselves at the fire. A young girl saw him and said, “This man was also with him.” What a wonderful thing it was to be recognized as a friend of the Saviour! But Peter was afraid. Rather than proudly telling the truth, he lied, saying that he did not even know Jesus. Twice again someone said that Peter ,was one of Jesus’ followers. Both times he told a falsehood. The Saviour had told Peter that before the cock (rooster) crew, he would say three times that he did not know his Lord. As the cock crew after the third lie, Jesus turned and looked at Peter. What sorrow there must have been upon the Lord’s face as He realized that one of His dearest friends had been ashamed of Him! When Peter saw the Lord’s look, he went out and wept. How grieved he must have been that he had forsaken his Lord just when He needed His friends the most! Some Christian boys and girls are following their Saviour “afar off.” They cannot be true to their Lord, for they are ashamed of Him when others “make fun” of them, or refuse to be their friends because they are Chris tians. When boys and girls stay close to the Lord Jesus, He keeps them from sinning and gives them the courage to tell others about His love for them. If they do grieve Him, they quickly ask His forgiveness which He gladly gives to them. One of the best ways to keep close to Jesus, and to keep true to Him, is to pray at once when we are tempted. He will help us to be brave. For the Children
