SEPTEMBER 13 A Vitalizing Power “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection” (Phil. 3:10). We are to remember that the resurrec tion is . . . a principle of spiritual energy, as well as a fact of human history. While to those who see. Christ only from the outer court of knowledge, and whose faith ends in the bare belief that “Christ died . . . and . . . rose again the third day ac cording to the Scriptures;” the mystery may remain, to those who press into the inner sanctuary of fellowship, praying that they may “know him, and the power of hiss resurrection;”": it will be more and more laid open to them as they advance. —A . J . G ordon . SEPTEMBER 14 A Time of Reckoning to Come “Called, his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods" (Matt. 25:14). The servants are His and the goods are His. The call and the equipment are di vine. The whole New Testament doctrine of ministry is embodied .here; and we earnestly, entreat the Christian reader to let this doctrine take full possession of his soul, and exert its full sway over his con duct, course, and character. We must never forget the two things, namely, the divine gift, and the human vessel in which the gift is deposited. There-is the sov-, ereignty of God and the responsibility of man. The solemn and soul-stirring word is: “Occupy till I come” (Lk. 19:13); . . . All the servants are to keep continually be fore their minds the solemn fact that there is a reckoning time coming. —■Things New and Old. SEPTEMBER 15 God's Answer “Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is,the Lord" (Psa. 144:15). Art thou in a dry and parched,,land, Wherein is no water? “When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys,?-jvArt thou full of fears?; “Fear, thou not; for I am with thee.; .be- not dis mayed ; for I am thy God.” Art thou in troublé? “Though I walk in the midst of trouble,” says David, “thou wilt revive me.” “My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is thé strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.” -.’- -A rchibald B e n n ie , SEPTEMBER 16 Love's Yearning “To know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge" (Eph. 3:19). Lord Jesus, make me understand That love of Thine, That brought Thee from Thy home above To enter .mine; And for my sake to undertake . To pay my,debt, my heart remake;:).. -That I, though human, should partake In the divine. Lord Jesus, I am one in Thee, Thou one in me; Oh, make my heart, mind, soul, and strength Lov-e only Thee; T

That while I sojourn here below, In thought, word, deed, I may bestow Thy love, and thus to others show The Christ in me. —W. H; R a n k in . SEPTEMBER 17 Strong Shoes for Rough Paths “ Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be" (Dent. 33:25).A We have the assurance that God will give us an" equipment of strength fitted for our work—shoes fit for our road. The tribe of Asher was located upon the rocky (sea coast, .and the people had rough’.roads to travel, and therefore needed to be well shod. As has been beautifully said, “God does not turn people out to scramble over rough mountains with thin-soled boots on. When an Alpinè climber is preparing for rock work, the; first thing he does is to get a pair of strong shôesjwith plenty of iron nails in the soles. If God sends ùs on stony paths, He will provide us with strong shoes.”'; Thé same thought is continued and amplified in the clause : “As thy days, so shall thy strength be.” . . , . In other1 words,, we have the assurance not only of every need’s" being met for our journey, but we have also a promise that grows with growing years.—F. J. H. -SEPTEMBER 18 When Hannah Prayed "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace" (Heb. 4:16). Hannah asked in all simplicity. She. poured out her soul before the Lord ( 1 Sam. 1:15). She kept nothing back. The words of her prayer put the deep need of her.soul before Him in frank and full reality. “For this child I prayed,” was her later testimony. She said exactly what -she needed, in simple and direct yet rev erent terms. It is wonderful how these Old Testament saints seem to have antici pated the .holy “boldness” with which we now know five can draw near to the throne of grace, through the mediation of Christ. Yet there was none of that irreverent fa miliarity which grates so much upon the ear in connection with some prayers that are offered today. We find-in Hannah a picture of simplicity, earnestness, and per sistency(in prayer—really three lessons in one! . , . .. And the petition was granted. “The Lord remembered her.”; BE-W . S. H ooton . SEPTEMBER 19 Praise Through Tears “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests Be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jisus"i-{ Phil. 4:6, 7). Linked with the spirit of prayerfulness. must be thaf of" thankfulness. If we are to pray for everything, we are also to be thankful for anything that the Lord sees fit to send us. It has been said that “any bird can sing in the daytime, but it takes a nightingale to sing in the dark,” by which is meant that any one can be glad and grateful when all is going Well, but it takes a true child of God to sing His praise in times of trial and difficulty. Thé Lord never fails, even though we may seem to be losing all else. As we seek to look into His face, wè shall find the spjrit of rebellion set at rest, and shall ho' 'eh-
