Communication During a Crisis

Learning Objectives 1. Examine the significance of implementing practiced crisis resource management behaviors. 2. Explore and discuss effective crisis communication techniques. 3. Identify and analyze the factors contributing to communication breakdown during a crisis.

Introduction During a crisis, effective communication within a team can be the deciding factor between a favorable or unfavorable outcome. Teams that communicate efficiently establish clear roles, distribute tasks and information effectively, and utilize shared knowledge to make decisions. Conversely, poor communication in crisis situations often leads to confusion, duplicated tasks, and information loss. This chapter explores the importance of practiced crisis resource management behaviors, introduces crisis communication techniques, and addresses the reasons behind communication breakdowns. Crisis resource management involves practiced behaviors such as leadership designation, role clarity, and dynamic decision making, while crisis communication techniques encompass concise handoff processes, closed-loop communication, and “state-of-the-union” summaries. Nonverbal communication, communication breakdown factors, and the significance of debriefing

Crisis Resource Management Crisis resource management (CRM) encompasses a set of practiced behaviors that aim to reduce adverse events during emergency situations. When combined with professional competence and evidence-based knowledge, these behaviors contribute to improved outcomes. Key concepts in CRM include leadership designation, role clarity, and dynamic decision making. Leadership designation is crucial for effective communication during a crisis. Early identification of a team leader is essential. Some institutions utilize visual cues, such as hats or badges, to clearly indicate the team leader. The leader assigns supporting roles to team members, encourages suggestions from all team members, and communicates final orders to be implemented. Role clarity is vital to achieving successful outcomes in a crisis. In emergency situations, multiple well-intentioned clinicians may respond, making it challenging to assign roles. The team leader may be unfamiliar with the skills and capabilities of the responders, further complicating role assignments. It is critical to clearly identify supporting roles to prevent confusion, task duplication, and missed information. High-functioning CRM teams often utilize tools like the “Where do I Stand” diagram to help clinicians quickly identify the role of each team member.
