BREAD AND WINE The emblems give the believer a re­ trospective, introspective and prospec­ tive view of Christ’s finished work. 1 Co. 11:26. 1. Meaning o f the Bread 1. It symbolizes the bruising of Christ by the Roman scourge; the crown of thorns; the cruel nails, and the spear thrust. 2. It symbolizes the nature of His death. The Bread of life because He passed through death. He. 2:9'. He passed through the fire. Ps. 88:7. He is precious because of the fire! 3. It symbolizes the nature of the “new man.” Christ is the origin of the new life. Pr. 8:35. He is the food of the new life. Jno. 6:35, 37. He is the fullness of the new life. Jno. 8:36; 10: 10 . 4. It symbolizes future union of Body and Head. They are one in sub­ stance. Jno. 17:21; He. 2:11. They are one in destiny. Jno. 17:24. They will be one in eternal union. Re. 19:9. 2. Meaning of the Wine 1. A reminder of life given. Jno. 10:18. 2. ’ A 'rem inder of life taken. He. 9: 22; Isa. 53:8. 3. Symbol of life received. Jno. 6: t 55. 4. For Purity. “Every man th a t hath this hope in Him purifieth himself, even as He is pure.” (1 John 3 :3 ). 4. For Suffering. “Christ suffered for us, leaving us an example.” (1 Pet. 2:21). 5. For Patience. “Consider Him th a t endureth such contradiction . . • lest ye he wearied and faint.” (Heb. 12:3).
