fiscal year. The program includes a new apprenticeship grant component of $400 per week up to a maximum of $16,000 for each apprentice for in-class training. “The Building Communities Strong Fund could also help support local infrastructure, including community centres, youth spaces, recreation facilities, and gathering places that are essential in rural communities,” stated Mingarelli. “The update also includes $660 million over five years, plus $110 million ongoing to strengthen sport and recreation infrastructure across Canada.” The MP indicated she is paying “close attention” to the impact of the Trump tariffs on local industry, agriculture, businesses, and others in the riding, and what federal support exists or is proposed to help those affected.

as special guests. Mario Zanth, Clarence- Rockland mayor and current warden of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, Russell Township Mayor Mike Tarnowski, and other Ontario MPs attended to hear Joly and Solomon announce federal measures to help businesses affected by the U.S. tariffs, including a $1 billion program through the Business Development Bank of Canada and a $500 million Regional Tariff Response Initiative.

MP Giovanna Mingarelli says there are lots of potential benefits for her riding in the federal government’s spring eco- nomic report. The Prescott-Russell-Cumberland Liberal MP sent an email response May 6 in answer to a request for comment by EAP. “The Spring Economic Update includes measures that speak directly to priorities in Prescott-Russell-Cumberland,” stated Mingarelli, “including affordability, housing, skilled trades, industry, agriculture and food security, official languages, and community infrastructure.” The MP noted “important opportunities” for the riding through investment by the Team Canada Strong program for recruiting, trai- ning and hired of new skilled trades workers. The program’s target goal is to increase the number of skilled tradespeople in Canada by between 80,000 by the 2030-2031

Mingarelli hosted a special gathering May 4 in Vars that featured Minister of Industry Melanie Joly and Evan Solomon, minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario “These measures will help Canadian businesses, including those in the steel, aluminum and copper sectors adapt,” sta- ted Mingarelli, “remain competitive, and protect good jobs here at home, including Prescott-Russell-Cumberland. Municipalities, non-profits, cultural organizations, and local partners should begin identifying priority projects, updating cost estimates, and buil- ding partnerships so they are ready when application details become available.” RUSSELL AND THE NATION LAUNCH ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT FOR REGIONAL WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT

Environmental assessment underway The study will follow the requirements of a Schedule “C” Municipal Class Environ- mental Assessment process under Ontario’s Environmental Assessment Act. As part of the process, the municipalities and consulting firm CIMA+ will evaluate pos- sible locations and design concepts for the future plant. Officials say the preferred option will aim to minimize technical, environmental, social and economic impacts. Public consultation will form a major component of the study. Two Public Infor- mation Centres (PICs) are planned to gather community feedback and provide updates

on the project. Notices regarding the meetings will be published in local newspapers, on the web- sites of Township of Russell and The Nation Municipality, as well as on municipal social media channels. Residents wishing to receive updates or provide comments can contact Township of Russell Executive Director of Planning and Infrastructure Services Jonathan Bourgon, The Nation Municipality Director of Water and Wastewater Nicholas Pigeon, or CIMA+ Director of Water and Wastewater Infrastruc- ture Bradley Young.

by Russell Township, which concluded that the existing lagoon-based wastewater treat- ment systems in Embrun and Russell will eventually be unable to meet the demands of anticipated growth while maintaining high- quality effluent standards. The Nation Municipality also examined the possibility of connecting Limoges to the regional system because of the village’s proximity to Russell Township. The prelimi- nary preferred option identified through The Nation’s own planning process is to partner with Russell Township on the construction of a shared mechanical wastewater treatment plant. Municipal officials say the proposed facility would provide a more reliable and efficient wastewater treatment system through a regional servicing approach.

The Township of Russell and The Nation Municipality have officially launched a Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) study for a proposed consolidated mechanical wastewater treatment plant that would serve the communities of Embrun, Russell and Limoges. The announcement was made through a public notice issued on April 16, outlining plans for a new regional wastewater treat- ment system intended to support future population growth and improve long-term servicing capacity. According to the municipalities, the study builds on a recently completed Master Plan
