Everybody wins at family friendly hockey tournament
quiet Easter Sunday following the previous day’s finals and wrap-up party. «It’s been 19 years in the making.» His brother Luc had the original idea for a community hockey tournament that was devoted just to playing hockey for fun and nothing else. «He wanted to create a tournament for the community because he just loved hoc- key,» Serge said, adding that he helped out his brother at the beginning and, over the years, they became equal partners in all the behind-the-scenes organizing. This year, they got a bit of extra help on that end with the folks at Gaudreau Financial Services offering to help co-sponsor and organize the event. That first tournament 19 years ago fea- tured six teams, the same number as when the NHL itself first began. Like the National
Hockey League, the CR Community Hockey Tournament grew and grew, with this year’s event hosting 26 teams during a week-long schedule of hockey action. «That’s a record,» said Lavictoire. «We’d been comfortable with 24 the past while. This year, we just seemed to have evenmore people calling up saying ‘I want to play!’» Everyone in the tournament is either living in Clarence-Rockland now or moved away and just makes a point of coming back home from wherever they are now so they can get together with old friends and slap the puck around for a week. Luc and Serge spend a couple weeks ahead of the event sor- ting through the list of names of confirmed players and then assigning them to teams. That is how the tournament setup has always been. No one brings a team. Everyone waits to find out what team they play on and then
just get to pull on their team sponsor jersey and get out on the ice. «It’s always been a fun tournament,» said Lavictoire, «just playing the game we love.» The tournament also has always served as a fundraiser to help out the community in some way. This year, all the proceeds from the tournament after expenses will go towards paying for the ice time for all mightymite hockey players in the Rockland Nationals, Clarence Creek Beavers, and the Clarence-Rockland Lightning girls minor hockey clubs. «We’re trying to encourage kids to play hockey,» Lavictoire said, adding that he and his brother are grateful for the support of the community for their annual event. «The suc- cess of this tournament would be impossible without the support of the local companies and everyone else.

The Confederation Line East LRT Extension study is following the Transit Projects Assessment Process and the OR174 and Prescott-Russell County Road 17 (CR17) corridor is under the Municipal Class EA process for a Schedule ‘C’project.

The East LRT extension is one of three EA studies underway as part of Stage 2, the City’s plan to extend the benefits of rail to residents farther east, west and south that will add 19 new stations and 30 kilometres to the O-Train system– see ottawa.ca/stage2 for further information.
