Relay for Life reunion

GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

They trickled through the door in ones and twos and even small groups of four, but they kept on coming in a steady streamand staying to chat with old friends, meet new ones, or sign up as a walker and a chance to thumb their nose at cancer in the Relay for Life program. Carolyn Bourassa was smiling at the end of day and still smiling during a later phone interview about the results of the first Relay for Life Reunion gathering organized by the Five Counties regional office of the Cana- dian Cancer Society. The early-March event in Casselman saw 56 new registrations of participants in one of the annual Relay for Life events in Eastern Ontario scheduled for later in the year. “We were very happy,” said Bourassa, who was one of the chief organizers of the reu- nion. “We have two completely new teams for the Plantagenet event now.” Bourassa thinks that is a very promising omen for the Plantagenet Relay for Life event, which has its inaugural debut June 12 at l’École secondaire catholique de Plantage- net. Unlike many other 12-hour marathon

They came to see old friends, and make new ones, they came alone, as couples, and as families, they chatted, swapped stories, recalled fondmemories. Everyone who attended the Relay for Life Reunion in Casselman had their own personal reasons for being there. But as they browsed the information tables, checked out the displays of wigs designed to help cancer patients, especially the very young, feel less self-conscious after their chemotherapy treatment, each and every person at the gathering had one thing in common. They believe that there is a cure waiting out there for cancer and they are going to keep walking to help support the research for it. Relay for Life events that the cancer society organizes through its various partnership sponsors, the Plantagenet relay will be a six- hour event from6 p.m. tomidnight. Reasons for that decision, Bourassa noted, are that families tend to be busier at that time of year with the end of the school term coming up along with graduation and vacation plans. It’s a mid-month weekend just before the start of summer break, and a shorter event can serve as an introduction to the whole Relay for Life program for newcomers while still offering all the fun of a full-scale relay. There are still the 12-hour relays like the one in Maxville over the June 6 weekend. But even that is going through a change, switching from its traditional 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. duration, to amore family-friendly noon to midnight setup. Other relays elsewheremay still continue with the overnight marathon walking arrangement. “We’re trying to offer up a choice,” said Bourassa. “We’re trying to offer up some- thing for families, and we’re trying to appeal to the busy lives of people by offering them choices.” People interested in taking part in one or more of the Relays for Life can get more information by phone, toll-free, at 1-800- 669-4181, or online at www.relayforlifeon- tario.ca, and look for their local links.
