Are you a cake decorating expert or just starting? Join cake decorating expert Brenda Miller as she walks us through 90 minutes of new decorating techniques. After working at Hills Bank for more than 15 years, Brenda decided to be a full-time stay at home mom. That’s when her hobby of cake decorating became a career. For the next six years, Brenda made a variety of cakes for birthdays, weddings, and other special events. Although she’s “retired” from the cake business, she still enjoys working on an occasional cake to surprise family and friends. Iowa City Hospice Walk for Dignity Willow Creek Park (1117 Teg Dr, Iowa City) Sunday, April 28, 1:00 p.m.

You are invited to attend the Iowa City Hospice 20th Annual Walk for Dignity, a fun, family-friendly event that is all about remembrance and respect. The walk helps support the mission to provide services to anyone affected by a terminal illness, regardless of ability to pay. The walk will start at 1:00 p.m., but there will be a time of remembrance by the Memorial Wreath at 12:00 p.m. honoring the loved ones of all who attend. Arrive early to tie a ribbon on the wreath and write the name of your loved one to be read during a short ceremony. No registration is required. Bring the beauty of art and nature together by painting a locally made wren house with your choice of design. As the paint is drying, we will make a seed packet using recycled paper and seeds of flowers that will attract important pollinators such as butterflies and honey bees. In 2012, Brewmeister Kinkade and his brother Jon, a chef, hiked the entire Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. Join us at Guild Wurst Tavern in Coralville, home to Boot 'n' Flute Brewery, for an afternoon of great food, great beer, and stories about their six-month journey along the Appalachian Trail. There will be a presentation with photos from their trip, as well as a flight of beer for everyone to try—some beers deriving their names from adventures had on the trail—and a musical performance by the Kinkade brothers. The Saving Brinton Experience & Aftermath with Michael Zahs Hills Bank in North Liberty (590 W Forevergreen Rd) Wednesday, June 5, 9:30 a.m. The Iowa documentary film Saving Brinton has been traveling the world for the last two years, bringing to light a rare collection of some of the oldest moving pictures in the world found in southeast Iowa by local collector and historian Michael Zahs. As the subject of the film, Zahs attempts to restore and exhibit the newsreels, home movies, and lost films. Join us as Michael Zahs discusses what it was like to be followed by a film crew for 3 ½ years, traveling with the film to three continents, seven countries, 21 states, and over 120 screenings, and how the film was reviewed and received around the world. Come one, come all to hear about the “Greatest Show on Earth.” Janice Aria served as a clown, animal groomer/trainer, trained bear and dog act entrepreneur, and finally director of animal stewardship for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus at their respected Center for Elephant Conservation in Florida. Janice’s heart was broken when the circus was forced to close the “Greatest Show on Earth” after 146 years. She now lives in Iowa City and shares her exciting story of her many years in the circus. Vernon to give a program entitled “What It Means to be an Iowan.” Some of us were introduced to Michael through the documentary, Saving Brinton . African American Museum of Iowa museum educator Sean Donaldson uses history and musical examples to explain the evolution and relationship between early African American music and modern styles today. From early African beats and the jazz of the Harlem Renaissance to the popular music of the Civil Rights movement, the influences of traditional African music began with the spirituals sung by African Americans while working as slaves. Sean will trace how elements of spirituals can be found in blues, which led the way to jazz, and then spurred on R&B, rock and roll, hip hop, and other forms of modern music. Think of spring all year long by creating a felt flower piece! Using a pre-painted wood square, attendees will learn how to create and attach homemade flowers using felt. Blooming Acres owner Becka Owenv will provide step-by-step instructions and guidance throughout this two hour class. Your completed felt flower creation can be hung or placed against a wall to create the illusion of spring no matter the season.
