“What It Means to be an Iowan,” by Historian Michael Zahs Hills Bank in Mount Vernon (720 1st Ave SE) Wednesday, June 19, 9:00 a.m.
We are excited to have Iowa historian and collector Michael Zahs in Mt. Vernon to give a program entitled “What It Means to be an Iowan.” Some of us were introduced to Michael through the documentary, Saving Brinton . He is a fascinating enthusiast of our Midwestern heritage. Who better to provide some insights about Iowa and Iowans than Michael Zahs? In his own words Michael stated, “This presentation will emphasize less well-known places, people and events in Iowa that makes being ‘just from Iowa’ as good as it gets.” Register with a Friends Club representative at 319-679-2103 or Michelle_Zaruba@HillsBank.com. Behind the Beat Hills Bank in Cedar Rapids (3905 Blairs Ferry Rd NE) Tuesday, June 25, 2:00 p.m.
African American Museum of Iowa museum educator Sean Donaldson uses history and musical examples to explain the evolution and relationship between early African American music and modern styles today. From early African beats and the jazz of the Harlem Renaissance to the popular music of the Civil Rights movement, the influences of traditional African music began with the spirituals sung by African Americans while working as slaves. Sean will trace how elements of spirituals can be found in blues, which led the way to jazz, and then spurred on R&B, rock and roll, hip hop, and other forms of modern music. To understand history, you just have to look Behind the Beat! Register with a Friends Club representative at 319-679-2103 or FriendsClub@HillsBank.com.
