Funding Initiatives for Rural Communities
«Many Pioneer employees and their fami- lies live and work in rural areas, and they are also volunteer firefighters,» said Tara Moir, public relations manager, DuPont Pioneer. «We’re proud to support these brave men and women, who voluntarily risk their lives to help their neighbors in times of need, and we want to make sure they have access to the tools and training they need to be safer.» Founded in 1926, DuPont Pioneer was the first company to research, develop and sell hybrid seed corn and focuses on helping farmers increase productivity of corn to sup- port their families, invest in their farms and build stronger rural communities. “Our farms are our biggest assessment,” said Mayor Gary Barton. “We certainly ap- preciate you being here tonight.”

Robert Lefebvre, Alain Levac, and Trevor Cunning of DuPont Pioneer presented a cheque for $5,500 to fire chiefs Richard Sincennes andMichel Martin at the Cham- plain Town Council meeting, August 5, as part of the Funding Initiatives for Rural Communities (FIRE) program. The FIRE program is an initiative launched by DuPont in 2013 to help assure the safety of first responders in rural emer- gencies.The programprovides much needed rescue equipment and training for rural fire departments and emergency services. “Themost noble people in the world are the volunteer fire department,” said Lefebvre. “It is a pleasure for us to be able to contribute to this area.” According to Perdue University, grain bin rescues are among the most common rescue situations emergency services that rural areas come across. In 2010 there were 51 entrapment incidents across southern Ontario and northern United States resulting in 26 deaths, emphasizing the importance of awareness, proper training, and equipment for firefighters. Vankleek Hill post office may close on Saturdays Canada Post sent a letter to Champlain Mayor Gary Barton explaining that it may be necessary to close the VankleekHill post office on Saturdays, and reduce the hours during the week. According to Canada Post, letter mail has been declining dramatically and higher fees may not be enough to keep the corporation afloat.The letter states that Canada Post has amandate of being financially self-sufficient and, as such, needs to make smart choices about maintaining local service while not becoming a burden on taxpayers. The Champlain council members along with Mayor Barton have serious concerns about the potential Saturday closure and realignment of hours. The main concern is many citizens in the Vankleek Hill area work out of town. As a compromise, Mayor Barton sug- gested extending hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays to 6:30 p.m. in order to accom- modate for a Saturday closure. Council agreed during the August 5 council meeting, to send a letter toMP Pierre Lemieux, as well as the postmaster regarding the opposition to the hour changes in Van- kleek Hill.The L’Orignal post office recently closed on Saturdays, and the Hawkesbury post office is not open Saturdays, leaving Vankleek Hill the only post office in the area with Saturday hours.
