VATICAN CITY | It may be one of the most prestigious and important assignments of his political career. MP Pierre Lemieux reports from Vatican City on the elevation of Toronto Archbishop Thomas Collins to the College of Cardinals. “We’ve just returned from the Consistory, the ceremony for the elevation of the new cardinals,” said Lemieux during a Saturday afternoon phone interview, Rome time, from Vatican City. The Glengarry-Prescott-Russell MP is part of the federal delegation attending the weekend event during which Archbishop Collins and several other nominees from around the world are elevated to the rank of cardinals of the RomanCatholic Church. The three-hour ceremonytookplaceinSt.Peter’sBasilica during which Pope Benedict XVI presented each new cardinal with his

During his time on Parliament Hill, Lemieux, a practising Catholic, was involvedinfoundingtheCanada-HolySee FriendshipGroup,whichaimstoeducate MPs, senators and other federal officials about the history, role, and activities of the Holy See in global affairs. Vatican City has its own diplomatic corps, with papal nuncios, as the church ambassadorsarecalled,postedaroundthe world in countries like Canada. “What I have found inmy work is that many of them (MPs and senators) don’t know about this,” Lemieux said. “As parliamentarians,weareconcernedabout human rights and religious freedoms all around the world.”
