FEEL THE THRILL EMBRACING LIFE’S UPS AND DOWNS AND SEEKING ADVENTURE
Helen Keller once said, “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” Aug. 16 celebrates National Roller Coaster Day, a day set aside to celebrate the thrills in amusement parks as well as the thrills we seek and experience in our everyday lives. For me, I’d say I’m moderately adventurous and have experienced some fantastic adrenaline rushing moments in my life. I love roller coasters, have been tandem skydiving, and went zip lining across the gorge of Victoria Falls in Africa. The interesting thing for me, however, is that while I get a thrill with adrenaline rushing through my body from skydiving or zip lining, I also love the experience of something new and just being there in the moment. Visiting Victoria Falls was a bucket list item for me, somewhere I’d always dreamed of going, and simply taking in the views got my heart racing. My skydiving experience, however, was on another level. I and another staff member, Jan, decided to cross this one off of our bucket list and interestingly enough, I really wasn’t too freaked out about it, even though they make the risk extremely blunt and apparent when you sign waivers and watch introductory videos before going up in the airplane. On the way up, we were joking with the tandem skydiving instructors, and it was all fun and games until you watch the person before you jump out and see them drop out of sight so quickly.
don’t have to go on a roller coaster to find a thrill. In fact, for some people, their inner ear wouldn’t be too keen on the idea. Whether it be trying out a new restaurant, going to a party, taking up a new hobby, or vacationing somewhere new, taking a leap of faith and dabbling a bit outside of your comfort zone can be extremely rewarding, and the best part is that you can start off small. As your physical therapist, I certainly don’t want you taking my advice and skateboarding with a broken leg — I’m all about safety. I’m the type of person who will only go on the roller coasters that are well-maintained at theme parks. I avoid the “just put together yesterday” contraptions at the traveling carnivals. And on that note, if you are a thrill seeker, keep in mind that not everyone is an adrenaline junkie, and you shouldn’t push them to do something they aren’t comfortable with. It’s all about small steps. Cruising through life is just like riding a roller coaster — it has its ups and downs, and sometimes, it will throw you for a loop. But one thing is for sure: It will never allow you to just coast at a steady pace forever. It will constantly surprise you.
It all became so real in that moment, but before I had the chance to really think about it, I was already out of the plane, soaking in the thrill of that moment and enjoying the ride of a lifetime. But the beauty of taking risks is that you

months, and it was interfering with my exercise routine and other activities. It hurt all the time and was worse at night, so it affected my sleep. My pain had greatly diminished because I had gotten a cortisone shot, and I was wondering if I really needed PT. But Naureen told me the best time to do PT is while I’m pain-free. After a couple of months of PT with Naureen, I am free of hip pain and can participate fully in exercise class and my 3–5-mile daily walks/hikes are now pain free. Just as important, Naureen taught me so much about body mechanics that I know what to do to minimize the chance of a reoccurrence. “And last but not least, absolutely everyone at NCWSTC is very professional, welcoming, and so friendly. My PT sessions with Naureen (Jan and Ranya, too) were hard work but also lots of fun. And I got their undivided attention for the entire hour I was there. Thanks for your help, ladies, and for all of the great conversations!”
“The first time I went to North County Water and Sports Therapy Center (NCWSTC) was after experiencing a herniated disc. At the time, the entire facility was located at Frog’s behind the Home Depot in Carmel Mountain. As I remember, it was very small. Their new location on Innovation Drive is quite spacious, especially after their recent expansion.
“Over the years, I have had to seek out their help several times for various issues. Most recently, I went to them for help with hip pain due to bursitis. I had been dealing with hip pain for

CHOOSING JOY EVERY DAY
3 WAYS TO FOSTER A POSITIVE ATTITUDE
In today’s society, we are faced with tragic stories and upsetting information, no matter where we turn. This can quickly lead us to a negative mindset where we believe things can’t be fixed and will only get worse, so it’s even more important now to establish a positive mindset. Though it might be easier to bury your head in the sand, fostering positivity in your life will provide you with many benefits. But doing so is easier said than done. If you’re unsure where to begin, try out some of these methods to help you get started. Focus on the silver lining. When something bad or unfortunate happens, we are quick to think about the negatives and how they will impact us in the future. Instead,
we should be searching for a silver lining. You can find a positive in any situation, but you’ll have to put in the effort to flip your perspective.
Keep a gratitude journal. When we think about gratitude and thankfulness, our minds usually think about Thanksgiving. But we don’t need to wait for a special day to show gratitude. Things happen to us every day that we should be grateful for. If you’re struggling to acknowledge your blessings, keep a gratitude journal and write a few things you are thankful for each day. Over time, that thought process will seep into your daily life. Surround yourself with positive people. The people we associate with play a huge role in our mental well-being. If you’re constantly around people who put you down or tell you that you can’t accomplish certain things, you will feel worse about yourself — or even believe them. You need to block the negative people from your life and surround yourself with those who think optimistically.
Establishing a positive mindset in today’s world may be difficult, but it is not impossible if you develop a strategy and follow through with it.
