Our Annual Halloween Candy Buyback October 2019

The Meaning and Purpose in a Bag of Candy

afternoon, as I was sitting in my office reviewing patient charts, I looked up to see a woman standing outside my office. She knocked softly on the door, and I opened it, ready to explain that she was at the back entrance and how to go around to the front. “You’re Dr. Nagy?” she said. She had a large plastic bag in her hand. “Yes,” I said. She replied, “My husband was a Marine, and he passed away a couple months ago. He would be really proud of what you’re doing to support the troops. I wanted to bring this candy and support what you’re doing.” That moment made me think differently about the event. Initially, I thought this would just be a fun way to prevent cavities and connect with our patients. Hearing the woman’s story that day opened my eyes: The candy buyback was bigger than just our office; this meant something to people. It was a conduit for the community to their loved ones overseas. So many people had a spouse, relative, friend, sibling, or someone they loved serving in the military. The buyback was a way for them to feel connected, even if they were thousands of miles away. After that first year, we started doing a craft table for kids and a card-making station, where anyone could write a short note to go along with the care packages. At the end of the event, my staff and I read some of the cards the kids wrote. They were so sincere and heartfelt, and they made us just about tear up. “Please come home safely. We appreciate you,” one read. Over the years, the buyback has evolved, and we’ve connected with more and more people. A few years ago, the buyback fell on a Saturday. We cleared our parking lot, local bands came to play, and there were carnival games for the kids and representatives from the military, as well as Vietnam veterans. That year, we collected 900 pounds of candy. By that time, we’d connected with the USO, and a very sweet couple came out at the end of each event to collect the candy. They took it back to the USO, where the candy would be dispersed into holiday care packages and distributed to airports all over the world, where troops and their families could receive them. That year, the couple drove up in their little Honda, saw our massive piles of candy (enough to fill two treatment rooms), and said, “We’re going to need a bigger car.” They came back a while later with a van. This year, we’ll be hosting our buyback on Nov. 4. We’re all looking forward to seeing how much candy we collect. It’s amazing to see how a little idea can take flight and become bigger than us, bigger than just a bag of candy. This is the kind of light we want to shine in the community.

Several years ago, in early October, my team and I were at a continuing education seminar when an idea took root. During our lunch break, we sat together and chatted about work and life. Someone mentioned Halloween, and someone else lamented how much candy their kids brought home from trick-or-treating. Each holiday meant huge bags of candy lying around the house, providing tooth-aching temptation for the whole family. I said something like, “We should just buy kid’s candy from them.” This October marks our 12th year hosting our Halloween Candy Buyback. What started as a simple way to prevent cavities has blossomed into a meaningful event for our entire office and for our community. When we first started, the Iraq War was going on, and after our initial meeting, we realized we might be able to provide the troops overseas with something to enjoy for the holidays and let them know people were thinking about them. We’d buy candy back from our patients, put together care packages, and send them to the troops. Our first year, we collected somewhere in the neighborhood of 400 pounds of candy. Knowing we would be shipping it overseas, some of our patients kindly donated money to help cover the cost of shipping. It was pretty cool to see people get excited about the cause.

As the buyback continued, information about it reached more people. One October

With the spookiest day of the year fast approaching, there’s nothing like a scary movie night to get the whole family into the Halloween spirit. The only problem is most frightful films really aren’t for kids, and the ones that are often fall flat. But, if you’re looking for a flick that will have the whole family on the edge of their seats (without traumatizing anyone), consider our top three picks for scary, family-friendly movies. NO. 3: ‘GHOSTBUSTERS’ “Who you gonna call” to be high on this list? The 1984 spectral classic, “Ghostbusters.” While this may be more of an action- comedy, plenty of scares and creepy imagery still get a jump out of first-time watchers young and old alike. If you’re looking for a lighthearted movie night that still captures a Halloween feel, “Ghostbusters” is a great choice. NO. 2: ‘CORALINE’ Few authors weave creepiness with coming-of-age stories together better than Neil Gaiman, and his 2009 film “Coraline” proves just that. Based on Gaiman’s book of the same name, director Henry Selick uses his signature stop-motion animation style to bring the script to life. While young children may find the doll-like imagery too unsettling, this is a great introductory thriller for preteens. NO. 1: ‘SCOOBY-DOO ON ZOMBIE ISLAND’ Yes, a Scooby-Doo movie is at the top of this list — and it deserves to be. As the feature-length debut of Scooby, Shaggy, and the rest of the Mystery Gang, this 1998 film doesn’t pull any punches. While the hand-drawn animation and slapstick high jinks of the original Hanna-Barbera cartoon are all there, make no mistake: There are some creepy moments in this movie. Between scary zombie elements and a spooky Voodoo doll scene, this is the perfect film to get your kids into the Halloween spirit. For the Whole Family! Scary Movies

Celebrating Education

Dr. Nagy Becomes an American Sleep and Breathing Academy Diplomate Education is a cornerstone of Nagy Family Dental Group. It’s something we all cherish because we know the doors it opens. From our administrative team to our dentists, education has been paramount in giving us the skills and knowledge we need to serve our patients at the level of quality they’ve come to expect. Continuing education and training help us serve our patients better and allow us to provide up-to- date services and treatments. For Dr. Nagy, education was crucial in his pursuit of a career in dentistry and finding his passion for helping people. His experiences at The Ohio State University were definitive in setting him on the path to a career focused on giving and serving others. When it comes to sleep breathing disorders, we are on the forefront, staying up to date on sleep breathing disorders and the upper airway’s relation to dentistry and how we can help diagnose and treat them. We’ve taken every opportunity to learn more and prepare ourselves to better serve our patients in this realm. Last month, Dr. Nagy reached another milestone in his dental career when he became a diplomate for the American Sleep and Breathing Academy, an organization that focuses on breathing and wellness for providers. The certification acknowledges that a provider has reached a higher level of training, and it signifies their dedication to their profession. To receive this distinction, Dr. Nagy completed rigorous training and then had to qualify for the credential. He will bring his advanced knowledge regarding obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep breathing disorders to help our patients improve their quality of life. It will also allow him to further serve our community and share it with other clinics and providers, fulfilling our mission to be generous citizens in every way possible.

We are so happy to recognize the achievement of our founder. We know this will be a benefit to you and all of our patients!

No-Carve Pumpkin Designs! Just in Time for Halloween

haunted house! Then, use paint, balsa wood sheets, and hot glue to create silhouettes, ghosts, windows, and doors for a haunting effect! CREATIVE WITH STRING Use cotton twine and hot glue to create a web-like design on the surface of your pumpkin. Don’t forget to add a few plastic spiders! You can also use string art to create ghostly words or images. Lay out your design with small pegs or nails and wrap the string around them to reach your desired effect. NOTHING BUT NET You can create eerie pumpkins using fishnet stockings. Spray-paint your pumpkin if desired — just make sure the design of the stockings will stand out. Once the paint is dry, cut the legs off the stockings, slide the pumpkin inside, remove the extra fabric around the stem, and use hot glue to secure it.

COLORFUL PAINT Painting your Halloween pumpkins gives everyone a chance to participate. Be creative by using different designs, cutouts for silhouettes, drip paint to create a marble design, or nail polish and water to give white pumpkins a unique and vibrant look. A SPOOKY MONSTER By adding a witch hat, wrapping a pumpkin in cheesecloth, attaching spider legs, or tying on a vampire cape, you can create a pumpkin version of the most popular Halloween monsters. Along with these accessories, you can also use paint, construction paper, and other craft materials to add the details that will make your creation pop! Jack-o’-lanterns go hand-in-hand with Halloween, but digging through the inside of a pumpkin is not something everyone enjoys. If you aren’t keen on cutting open a pumpkin, here are a few no-carve ideas you can try this Halloween!
