Scripture:
Matthew 6:10
H ave you ever wondered what your purpose in life is? I mean, by the fact you’re reading this arti- cle in StreetScene magazine, I can pretty much assume that like me, you are at least a car enthusiast. But let’s be honest, most of us haven’t owned just one car, we’ve had a lot of them and many times we think this is going to be our last one and we expect it to really make us happy forever. Funny thing about cars though, I know they won’t fulfill me in life but I’m always keeping my eye out for the next good deal on one. I’ve met many people who are still searching for fulfillment in life and their purpose. Oftentimes they think if they just get the tro- phy for Best of Show then they’ll feel like their purpose has been completed. Or, if they just get the one car they’ve always wanted and build it just the way they want it with the right engine, interior, paint and just-right rims that it is going to make them feel fulfilled. It should, and it will, but it’s always a temporary feeling. God never intended for us to find our purpose in things of this world. He intended us to find our purpose in Him and in Him alone. That’s why in Matthew 6:10 of the Lord’s prayer Jesus prays: “may your kingdom come soon, may your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.” You see, true purpose in life comes to mankind when we seek God‘s will first and his kingdom first. He hardwired us to find the greatest joy, not in things, but in Him. He created us so that we will truly be fulfilled when we pray to Him, Lord, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth
and in my life as it is in heaven. I know it really doesn’t make sense in this world. Worldly wis- dom tells us if we want to be happy, we should put ourselves above others in all things, do what we want to whenever we want to, and buy whatever we want to and that will make us happy. The problem is it just does- n’t work. Let’s be honest, the most fulfilled and respected people we know aren’t the people with the coolest cars, the fastest engines, or the best-looking paint jobs. They are those who put God’s kingdom first then other people next and then themselves last. Now, if you disagree with this thinking that’s okay. But I chal- lenge you that tonight when you lay down in your bed to think about it and ask yourself what’s really going to matter in 100 years. I guarantee you’ll quickly realize it’s only what you do for God and for others that will matter in 100 years. My dad was one of the greatest mechanics and crafts- man I believe ever worked on cars (I do acknowledge bias) but on his deathbed it wasn’t his car he want- ed by his side, it was his family. Eventually it wasn’t his family that gave him peace as he went into hospice (although we were there for him by his side) it was the fact that he gave his life to the Lord at 80 years old. He knew the love and forgiveness of God would soon complete his purpose here on earth and he would enter the kingdom of heaven. I hope you seek out your purpose in life and that you too will find what I have found. Our true purpose starts with a relationship with God.
