Support the New, Cherish the Old!

H aving been editor of StreetScene for the past 17 years, I’ve always been impressed with the effort that goes on behind the scenes of each event to make sure the basics are taken care of, as well as including some new activities. I’ve witnessed Builders’ Showcase at the Street Rod Nationals grow from a small gather- ing only three years old to a ‘mini-show-within-a- show’ at the premier Street Rod Nationals. This prestigious gathering of top builders from across the nation vote amongst themselves who should win their “America’s Elite Builder of the Year” award with Moser Engineering sponsorship. With the given popularity of trucks this past decade NSRA decided to launch their new “Top Truck” awards in 2026. Billet Specialties is an eager sponsor, recognizing the impact this latest truck trend has had on our aftermarket. At every National Street Rod Association Divisional event, two standout trucks will earn this exclusive, machined billet-aluminum Top Truck award. Billet Specialties didn’t stop the CNC cutters with just Divisional trophies either, they will also be award- ing four elite Top Truck awards at this year’s 57th Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky, coming up August 6-9. These four trucks will be chosen to advance to the prestigious Circle of Winners display area on Sunday where the ‘Best of the Best’ take center stage. We think the judges will be over- whelmed by the sheer number of cool trucks in attendance. If things keep going the way they are, we may see an annual Truck Showcase! If you think your truck has what it takes this is your moment to come out and cruise the streets of NSRA events. Another signature trait of NSRA that impresses me is the effort that goes on behind the scenes to offer free benefits to membership. Setting the stan- dard is the free Michigan Hot Rod Association’s Rod Repair Shop, but possibly on a higher level of ben- efit are the free Safety Inspections at every event. These inspections may prevent a trip to the Rod Repair Shop in the first place but regardless, it’s a first-class, industry-recognized program designed to be performed annually. The Safety Program loosely started in 1972 but officially became the NSRA Safety Inspection Program in October 1975 with Walker Radiator as the sole sponsor. Added to the list of new for 2026 is anybody who brings their vehicle through the Safety Inspection Lanes and allows the NSRA Safety Team to inspect their vehi-

cle will receive a ticket to enter the NSRA Super Prize Drawing once the vehi- cle has gone through the Safety Lanes. Vehicles must come through the Safety

Lanes to receive a ticket, but DO NOT have to pass the inspection to enter the Super Prize Drawing that takes place Saturday at 3pm. The winner will be contacted by phone, and the Super Prize can be picked up at Nick Donovan’s “Rockin’ Road Show” broadcast trailer. If the winner does not claim the prize before the Awards Program, their number will be called again during the Awards Ceremony. If still unclaimed, the prize will be returned to the drawing and awarded to another participant who is present. This new “Safety Drawing” has been established to reinforce the importance of vehicle safety and increase aware- ness of the complementary inspection service pro- vided to members. This is just one more reason to make sure you bring your vehicle through the Safety Lanes during the event weekend. Remember, inspections are a FREE service provided by the NSRA Safety Team. Not all, but many of these extra activities have been tested at the Street Rod Nationals before they catch on at Divisional events. Some are limit- ed for space, like Autocross, but case in point is the Builders’ Showcase. A spinoff has been held at the Nationals East for the past four years thanks to Custom Auto Mall and this year at the Western Nationals the 1st Annual West Coast Builders Showcase was held thanks to Old School Speed Shop. Considering 57 years’ experience hosting out- door car shows, it would fill volumes listing every special gathering and/or activity NSRA has hosted over the years for its members attending their events. We hope you’ll convince your friends to join in on the fun “NSRA STYLE.”

Human Error Hi Tom,

and hope to run into you again while in York this year at the East Coast Nationals in my ‘37 Ford. Vince LoPresti Via e-mail Vince, They tell me AI will eliminate human error, problem is, I’ve never liked “milk toast.”—ED Historic Replica Bill Tom, I last wrote to you 10 years ago as I had been working on an Ohio House Bill that addressed titling kit cars or swap meet- sourced parts builds. In the last General Assembly, it was called HB70. I’m happy to announce that after 16 years of hard work, disappointment and aggravation, the content of my bill was com-

I just finished reading your arti- cle “Can Human Error Be Cured” in the May edition of StreetScene. I enjoyed reading about how you and your wife like to “edit” TV shows and movies for their authen- ticity. I can relate because it upsets me to see things that are not cor- rect date wise. Simple things like the years of the cars compared to the era we are watching. The scene in “Goodfellas” comes to mind where they are waiting at the airport leaning on the rear of a ‘65 Chevy and the header says “Idlewild Airport, 1963.” I really admire a movie/TV show that takes the time to fact check and edit to make things correct. Two things I look for that most people

don’t remember or consider is the red and blue mailboxes that used to be olive green and the yellow lines on the road that didn’t come to be until around 1966. You’ll often notice a lot of ‘30s movies with the old cars, the lines in the road are yellow where they should be white. Maybe I’m too critical, but that makes it even more fun to point these things out. I always enjoy your articles

Jerry, Your persistence, dedication, and winning efforts to help fellow rodders gets a hearty thank you from NSRA.—ED Kudos to Tuff Stuff Tom, I won the Tuff Stuff $400 gift cer- tificate from the Super Prize Program at the Quad Cities event in August, so I visited their website and decid- ed I really liked a black-case, 100amp alternator and a high- torque, mini-starter for my ‘78 Trans Am. The dollar amount totaled a lit- tle more than the certificate was for so I sent it in with a note saying I

bined with HB54 and signed into law by our Governor Mike DeWine. If a person builds such a car today, they will still be able to register it under the existing self- assembled law. Under that law, I built a ‘29 Ford roadster pick-up out of swap meet-sourced parts, plus the skin off the deck lid of my girlfriend’s car. The title read, “Roadster, assembled from various parts in 1975.” A builder today will now be able to title such a parts-sourced car or kit build as a “Historic Replica” and title it by what make, model, and 25-year- old car it most closely resembles. Purchase a one-time fee, good for life, historic replica license plate, display it on the rear of their car and follow the rules that govern the use of antique vehicles. If a person has had a self-assembled car for years, they can retitle it as a Historic Replica. Just follow the DMV’s guidelines. Jerry Jones Early Times Custom Car Club Via e-mail

would like to get the two items and would pay for the extra if that was okay, if not I would just take the mini- starter. A few days later I received an e-mail saying they would cover the full amount. I was not expecting that at all. Today the package arrived very well packed and upon opening the starter and alternator I was impressed, especial- ly with the finish on the black case of the alternator and as a bonus, a free ball cap was included. Overall, I’m very impressed with Tuff Stuff and their products. Harry York Garage Tour Coordinator Quad Cities Street Rod Nationals Board Member of POCI Blackhawk Chapter Via e-mail Harry, All our Super Prize participating companies take fulfilling their certificates seriously because providing good customer relationships is why they signed on in the first place.—ED

Evolving Dealers

V elocity Restorations based in Cantonment, Florida, is a classic vehicle and resto- mod builder that is continuing to expand its national footprint as its authorized dealer network grows to 15 luxury dealerships across nine states. With placements in automotive showrooms across the country, customers can now expe- rience and test drive Velocity’s re- engineered classics closer to home. The growing network includes partnerships with luxury dealer- ships from coast-to-coast, such as McLaren Boston, McLaren Scottsdale, McLaren Denver, RK Motors, Autosport Design and members of the Warren Henry Automotive Group, among others. The current dealerships span California, Arizona, Colorado, Texas, North Carolina, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Velocity’s home state of Florida. These strategic relationships make it easier for potential customers to view and drive Velocity vehicles in person and reflects an increasing demand for premium restomods across high-end dealerships. Unlike traditional specialty car builders, Velocity operates a con- signment-based dealer model that allows retail partners to showcase

inventory without upfront acquisi- tion costs. Each dealership receives dedicated showroom displays, branded marketing materials and access to professional photogra- phy and video assets to support sales efforts. For clients seeking a bespoke experience, dealers also have access to Velocity’s 14- to 16- week build slots, allowing cus- tomers to configure vehicles tai- lored to their exact specifications. This makes ordering one of these classics or restomods comparable to purchasing and ordering a new vehicle from the factory. Velocity’s offerings are like buying a modern vehicle in vintage form as most of the components included in the build are brand new to ensure comfort and reliability.

Velocity also has several spec builds available for immediate ship- ment to a buyer, should they find one to their liking. “The way spe- cialty vehicles are sold is evolving,” said Velocity CEO Stuart Wilson. “Restomods are no longer confined to small shop builders or private commissions. Today, customers can walk into a luxury showroom, see the vehicle in person and get behind the wheel. Our dealer model reflects that shift and posi- tions Velocity at the forefront of this next phase of the industry.” Velocity plans to continue growing its authorized dealer presence to new cities and states while main- taining a curated partnership strat- egy. NSRA Autocross 2026 Sponsor Spotlight

By Kevin Webb NSRA Autocross Director autocross@nsra-usa.com

Bowler Performance Transmissions D rive into Lawrenceville, Illinois, and the land- scape doesn’t describe what is happening behind the doors of Bowler Performance Transmissions. If it lives between the back of the engine and the rear pinion, Bowler has either built it, fitted it, or made the bracket that holds it. Recently Mark Bowler gave us some insight into why his company became an NSRA Autocross sponsor. Kevin: Having companies like Bowler Performance Transmissions on board as a sponsor of NSRA Autocross events gives a big boost toward our efforts to spread autocross excitement to attendees of our events. How did Bowler get their foot in the door in autocross? Mark: Bowler’s programs are engineered around the hardest demands a street-driven performance car will ever see—the kind of abuse autocross and pro-touring driving puts on a transmission including repeated full- throttle shifts under load, second-gear hits with the tires loaded, sustained heat cycles, and the brutal duty of going from cold to wide-open in a single corner. That design target is fed by years of data from our own in- house vehicles and testing. I was at the beginning of the ‘Pro-Touring’ craze, building cars to perform and test along the way. As an enthusiast with a passion for high speed and handling, seat time experience helps deliver the demands that are required to perform. I became great friends with Brett Volkel of Ridetech and was part of the first Street Challenge Series, which helped pro- vide real data and pushed the demands of transmission requirements. Kyle Tucker was the first to encourage Bowler to get involved in offering the same attention to detail we offer in our automatic transmissions applied to the popular Tremec transmissions. Bowler was part of the first Optima Street Car Challenge and the pro- touring builders and Optima Ultimate Street Car racers were running Bowler drivelines at their limit. Bowler supports the industry with an in-house fleet of test vehi- cles because we are more than a textbook company, we are a true engineer it, test it, prove it, and build it company. We say: “If the racetrack can’t break it, the customers’ Saturday cruise won’t either.” Kevin: What steps do you take when guiding a cus- tomer’s transmission choice to determine the best outcome?

Mark: Many shops build transmissions but at Bowler we think we build

transmissions differently using a coachworks approach; one technician, one transmission from a base core to a curated hand-built, fully blueprinted masterpiece. Each transmission is custom-built to the customer’s require- ments, vehicle information, and then fully dyno tested with the complete package that the customer is going to receive. There are no shelves of pre-assembled trans- missions waiting for an order. The transmission in front of the technician is your transmission that is being tai- lored to your vehicle specifications. The build is driven by a tech sheet revealing vehicle weight, engine com- bination, engine torque, rear gear ratio, tire size, as well as the intended use—every choice that matters downstream is captured upstream. Our philosophy is that horsepower is just a number and if we build a transmission for horsepower, and not torque, it’s going to fail. Torque is what matters. The whole point of a transmission is to transfer torque to the rear axle. The transmission, converter, and calibration are tested and signed off before it ever leaves the building. Kevin: How intensive is the testing before they are shipped to the customer? Mark: Most performance shops dyno test but we wanted to extract more data than a store-bought dyno, so we built our own configuration that moni- tors what others don’t. We wanted real-world results, so we use a popular engine for testing. No electric motors, or basic four or six-cylinder drive motors, we use what our industry demands, modern technolo- gy. We have a GM LT1 engine powering our dyno, producing 480 lb-ft of torque. We have an eddy load brake that will load 800 lb-ft of torque. We monitor line pressure hot vs cold, converter pressure, cooler flow, and behavior under load with the customer’s exact converter and calibration in the loop. The com- plete system goes on the dyno together: transmis- sion, converter, calibration. If it doesn’t prove out as a system, it doesn’t ship as a system. The complete dyno session happens in a custom soundproof room so we can monitor noise and temperature. Kevin: We thank Mark for giving our readers an insight into Bowler’s commitment to push the limits of high performance. We look forward to welcoming Bowler Performance Transmissions to our events in 2026.

ALTERNATOR

L earn to rebuild a Mopar LA- series small-block engine with this handy how-to guide. The Mopar LA-series engine is a small-block V-8 that powered various Chrysler, Plymouth, and Dodge vehicles from 1964 to 1992. This engine replaced the A-series engine (“LA” stands for “Light A”) in most models, as the original A-series engine was phased out in 1967. Initially intro- duced with a displacement of 273ci, the 318ci and 340ci (the performance ver- sion) engines arrived in 1967 and 1968, respective- ly. Eventually, the 340ci engine grew to 360ci and was tamed down as emis- sions became more of a concern. In 1992, Chrysler released the Magnum version of the LA-series engine as a 318ci 5.2L power- plant to further address those emissions issues. The 360ci engine became a 5.9L Magnum in 1993. This book focuses exclusively on the rebuilding of the LA-series engine (pre-Magnum) from 1964 to 1992. Veteran author and for- mer Chrysler engineer Larry Shepard walks you through the process of a complete engine rebuild using step-by-step instruc- tion and more than 500 photos. The required tools and a thor- ough diagnosis to determine if the engine truly needs a rebuild are included. Disassembly, analy- sis, and inspection of which parts can be saved and which must be replaced, parts selection (OEM or

aftermarket), machining, reassem- bly, and engine break-in are cov- ered. All systems and parts are examined, including the block, cylinder heads, cams, valvetrain, rotating assembly, induction sys- tem, and exhaust. If you are restoring a Dart, Valiant, Duster, Barracuda, or Dodge truck or you simply want to know how to rebuild this engine, Shepard guides you every step of the way. The 8 1/2-inch x 11-inch, 176-page softbound book features 508 color photos. On Friday morning the Pueblo Police Department will take you on a guided tour through old downtown Pueblo from the north part of town all the way to the fairgrounds. The Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce coordinates the parade and greets you on the parking lot with free coffee and donuts while cars are being lined up. Fred Williams and his crew will be handing out dash plaques to all participants. The Convention Bureau will make two “Award Picks,” one for an early vehicle and one for a late model. These awards will be given way on Sunday at the Awards Program. If you have an open vehicle and would consider letting a city dignitary ride along, you’ll move to the head of the line to lead the parade. Remember, arrive early because they will only take the first 100 vehicles and the parade leaves at 10am sharp!

Spotlight Builder This year the Spotlight Builder at the Rocky Mountain Nationals will be Johnny’s Auto Trim & Rod Shop. Johnny grew up in the Alamosa area where he went to high school and worked as a brick layer before taking up the trade as a hot rod builder. His passion and dedication for build- ing rods soon paid off when he received a “Great 8” award at the Detroit Autorama for a ‘62 Corvette named “Elegance” and in 2018 with a ‘57 Chevy named “Imagine” that won the “Ridler” award. Today Johnny is national- ly recognized for his beautiful custom interiors. Pedal Car Contest & Display Mountain Nationals will again feature a collection of pedal cars on dis- play with a voting process for awards. The voting process is done with money on the cars and all the funds collected are donated to “Make a Wish.” Also there will be a track where kids can try their skill at driving pedal cars, which is free! Tom Divine will run the contest so if you’d like to bring a pedal car, contact him at 719-287-5582. The Rocky

2026 OFFICIAL SPONSORS

NSRA would like to thank the following companies for supporting the 2026 NSRA Divisional Events

Feature design by Paul Sloup Article & photography by Louie Mayall

T he Harley Earl designed 1937 Cadillac LaSalle is now considered a staple of Art Deco design. The low slung and swooping Caddy was designed to be a mid-priced luxury car and was introduced in 1934. This particular LaSalle convertible was bought in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, from the Berkshire Auto Group in 1937. The car remained in the original owner’s hands until 1966 when Richard Scace bought the car. Richard and family (including his son Daniel who now owns the car) used it to cruise around town, in parades, and occasional shows. After a couple of years, the car ended up parked under a carport with minor inconven-

iences and didn’t move for years. The car moved to the family farm in 1975 and spent the next 25 years in what was basically the chicken coup. The new mil- lennium brought the ragtop to the top of the family’s mind and the father/son teamed up to get the Caddy back on the road. The two worked when they could, but never got to far on the project over the next couple of decades with Daniel having a family, his own rods, and dad enjoying retirement. When Richard passed away in 2022, his son Daniel decided it was time to bring the car up to snuff and he got building with the help of his rodder friends. The 1934 to 1938 LaSalle comes with a great chassis right from the start. It was the first production Caddy with hydraulic brakes, in 1937 it had a big

322ci mono-block V-8, and beefy frame rails (they drive surprisingly well stock). Dan cleaned off the stock frame and slipped in a FatMan Mustang II IFS with tubular A-arms, 11-inch GM front brakes (aka ‘big brakes’), RideTech coilovers, and power rack and pinion. The rear suspension is a 10-bolt on a tri-link with RideTech coilovers, power GM drums, 3.08 gears, and posi. Daniel decided to slip a Blueprint 5.3 LS motor in with an LS3 intake, Blueprint heads, coated shorty headers, and it’s backed up by a Gearstar 4L65E automatic overdrive. The chassis is finished off with 15x7 and 15x9 Wheelsmith wires wearing BFG T/A rubber (215/60/15 and 275/60/15) and Cadillac moons. Daniel’s intention was to not touch any of that JUNE 2026 33

Harley Earl goodness and changes are extremely minimal. The mirrors came from Billet Specialties, the headlights are halogen behind the stock lenses, the taillights are LEDs behind the stock lenses, and he made custom step plates on the running boards. Daniel and Jack Raymond straightened out the body and AutoTech in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, laid down the PPG All-Terrian Blue (GM 2013) paint. Tons of perfectly restored chrome and stainless finish the package off missing only the running board side spears. The interior is also surprisingly stock with a factory dash holding factory gauges, the stock seats (front and rumble), and all the original pulls and handles. Daniel added in a modern tilt column, a bil- let banjo wheel, a center console-style dash exten-

sion for the A/C and auxiliary gauges. Daniel wired everything together with a Speedway harness. Finally, Dragon Tail, owned by Rick Welch, was employed to stitch the interior in saddle leather, a tan top, and matching square-weave carpeting. Daniel did a great job keeping everything that makes a 1937 LaSalle a legend, but also building a great driving rod ready to cruise through retirement. It’s still the car that Harley Earl would recognize, but in Cadillac tradition it has the advanced stuff under the skin like modern EFI LS power, unequal length tubular A-arm IFS, and little computers/circuit boards everywhere. Classy, modern, totally unique, and ready to cruise cross-country. Sounds like perfection to me and odd rodders everywhere. JUNE 2026 35
