AN ESSENTIAL FACTOR IN MY PROFESSION

My work is so integrated with who I am as a person that the importance of being sincere affects my life both in and out of the office.

I think that once a lawyer wavers in their honesty, even one time, whether it be with clients, judges, or jurors, it taints them. When you’re a dishonest person in general, people can sense that about you. People, especially judges, are pretty quick to pick up on those traits. When choosing to lie, an attorney loses any of the credibility they may have accumulated over the years. They become less effective in the future, and their success wanes. Once you’re marked as being deceitful, it’s almost like you’re tainted forever. It can be tremendously difficult to convince people you are trustworthy after you’ve destroyed that trust. Our profession is also heavily scrutinized by the bar association, which governs our license status and ethics. The biggest thing they look for is deceptive lawyers — ones who may have cheated, lied, or acted dishonestly. The bar association comes down hard and heavy on these people, as they should. Former president Abraham Lincoln has this to say on the matter: “Resolve to be honest at all events. And if in your judgment you cannot be

an honest lawyer, resolve to be honest without being a lawyer. Choose some other occupation rather than one of the choosing of which you do, in advance, consent to be a knave.” Lincoln was an attorney in his time before becoming president and strove to be honest in all his dealings. I do much of the same. Being honest is paramount to my staff, my partners, my associates, and me. The value is one of our cornerstones. It’s also important for me to exhibit in my personal life, and it’s a trait I strive to pass on to Addy. Carrie and I do our best to ensure that honesty is an important part of Addy’s life. We make sure she knows she has to be honest, trustworthy, and loyal at all times, especially with us, even if it’s difficult sometimes. It’s just like I tell my clients, “Some of the stuff you have to tell me is going to be really bad, but I need to know it or I can’t help.” Addy is already such a kind person, so I have no doubt she will be truthful, too. We hope you’re just as confident with us, knowing we will represent you to our best ability and never waver from our path of truthfulness and integrity.

Many people in the court system are wary of attorneys, which emphasizes the need to be honest in all dealings. Everyone who works at Compton Law has an excellent reputation with the judges, opposing counsel, and insurance companies because we’re genuine people. Honesty is one of our core values and the reason we’ve become a successful firm. When we enter a courtroom or speak to people involved in a case, we’re straightforward, and we don’t play games. People respect that. We’ve shown that we aren’t the type of firm that cries wolf or tends to exaggerate in the cases we take. Building that trust between us and everyone else is especially important with the jury. During jury selection, one of the topics we discuss with them is honesty — why it’s vital to get facts and evaluate situations as they truly are without being deceitful. Whether it’s good or bad, the truth is always the way to go.

“WHEN WE ENTER A COURTROOM OR SPEAK TO PEOPLE INVOLVED WITH A CASE, WE’RE STRAIGHTFORWARD, AND WE DON’T PLAY GAMES. PEOPLE RESPECT THAT.”

BREAKING THROUGH THE TV TERMINOLOGY 4K, HDR, AND OLED DEFINED

When you shop for a new TV these days, you’re greeted with a bevy of acronyms and numbers — marketing terms you can’t make sense of. These are terms like 4K, HDR, and OLED, just to name a few. TV makers leave it up to you to figure out what these terms mean. Well, look no further. We’re going to cut through the marketing speak and get to the point. Here’s what today’s popular TV marketing terms really mean. 4K The TV buzzword “4K” has replaced “HDTV” and “1080p” as the go-to marketing term. In short, it’s a reference to the number of pixels on the screen. Standard high-definition TVs (1080p) have a vertical resolution of 1,080 pixels and a horizontal resolution of 1,920. Here’s where it gets weird.

4K TVs have a vertical resolution of 2,160 pixels with a horizontal resolution of 3,840.

whites, deeper blacks, and improved colors overall. It’s been used in photography for decades and in video since the 1990s. Most 4K TVs have built-in HDR processing, resulting in better color quality, which translates to better image quality overall. OLED Short for organic light-emitting diode, OLED TVs feature a microscopically thin layer of an organic compound that emits light when an electric current is introduced. Typical LED TVs rely on a backlight in order to produce a lit, visible image. These backlights take up space, resulting in a thicker TV. The major advantage of OLED TVs is they are incredibly thin and light, and they produce deeper blacks for an improved color and image quality.

Marketers decided to swap the vertical resolution as their reference point with the horizontal resolution, because higher numbers are more impressive, right? But 4K TVs seem to fall short of the moniker. Regardless, these TVs have improved color and image quality over standard HD, but you have to have devices — such as the PlayStation 4 Pro or a Blu-ray player — or services that output in 4K to take advantage of the boost in pixels. HDR High Dynamic Range, or HDR, is a type of image processing. When an image is processed, HDR is used to increase or decrease the luminosity of the image. It means bright

THE COST TO DIVORCE WITH CHILDREN

WHY IS IT MORE EXPENSIVE?

A divorce can drain a lot out of you physically, mentally, and financially. One of the most common questions clients ask their lawyers is, “How much is this going to cost?” The answer isn’t always going to be the same. There are many variants that can determine the total outcome for each party involved. If a divorce is uncontested and there is no marital property, the parties may be able to attain it for hundreds of dollars. However, if there are children, property, or alimony issues, a divorce can be expensive. Much of this additional cost comes when the divorcing parents want the separation to flow as smoothly as possible, especially when there are minor children involved in the divorce. When there are concerns relating to the child’s safety, welfare, or health, or if the parents are having trouble agreeing on how much child support should be, costs will increase. A parent may want to hire expert witnesses or consultants, such as educational specialists or psychologists, to help their children through this stressful situation. Paying for specialists’ support, in addition to an attorney’s hourly rate, court costs, filing fees, and the cost of copying and sharing documents can cause the price of a divorce to increase steeply.

Seeking lawyers who care about your prospects and keep you well- informed as the divorce progresses is important. Our Oklahoma divorce lawyers are well-versed with Oklahoma law and can fight for you and your children’s best interests. Why Do We Need A Leap Year?

THE CALCULATIONS THAT LEAVE US IN NEED OF AN EXTRA DAY

Every four years, February gains an extra day at the end of the month. But what does this contribute to the year as a whole? You might be surprised by what this one day does for us! The 365 days in each year represent the time it takes for the Earth to circle the sun. However, the orbit actually takes nearly a quarter of a day longer than that. The additional 0.2421 of a day might not seem like it would make a significant impact, but after a few decades, it adds up. To ensure the calendar and seasons stay on the right timeline, the leap day was created. THE START OF THE LEAP YEAR The Egyptians were the first to officially calculate how many days it takes to orbit the sun, revealing the need for a leap year. Europeans at the time used a calendar that followed a lunar model, which needed an entire month added

to retain consistency. The leap year wasn’t introduced into Europe until the reign of Julius Caesar. With the help of astronomer Sosigenes, Caesar created the Julian Calendar, which included 12 months and 365 days, with a single day added every fourth year. However, the Julian Calendar wasn’t perfect, because 0.2421 of a day can’t be rounded to a multiple of five, so it caused the calendar to have an extra 11 minutes every four years. Pope Gregory XIII fixed the problem in 1582 by creating the Gregorian Calendar. Now, a leap year occurs every four years except for the years that are evenly divisible by 100 and not 400. For instance, 1800 and 1900 were not leap years because they were divisible by 100.

approximately 187,000 people in the U.S. and 4 million people around the world celebrating their birthdays on Feb. 28 or March 1. People born on a Leap Day are faced with dilemmas such as which date they should receive their driver’s license. Although it varies from state to state, most consider March 1 the appropriate day for leap-year 16-year-olds — who are celebrating their fourth “official” birthday — to receive their license. With all the changes the calendar has undergone, it still isn’t quite perfect. Experts say that in about 10,000 years, it will need to be changed yet again.

A LEAP DAY BIRTHDAY The odds of being born on Feb. 29 are about 1 in 1,500, which leaves
