LIVING AND WORKING IN SOUTHAMPTON

Southampton is a great place to live and work. It offers a vibrant and varied nightlife, numerous leisure facilities and fascinating heritage attractions, as well as a marina and lots of green spaces. There really is something for everyone. Its waterfront location gives Southampton its own distinctive character. The city has a rich maritime heritage and a focus on water sports, sailing and ocean racing. It is well-connected too, with two mainline train stations, an international airport and easy access to cross-channel ferries. As well as the University’s arts venues, which include a theatre, concert hall and contemporary art gallery, the city has a range of venues for theatre, music, art, and comedy. Southampton has several large shopping centres with all the big high-street brands within easy reach. Southampton is one of the UK’s greenest cities and has several large parks in the city centre. Four of our campuses are close to Southampton Common – over 300 acres of managed woodland in the heart of the city. It’s the perfect place for walking or jogging and is also the venue for community events during the year. Our coastal location means there are lots of opportunities for water sports such as kayaking, windsurfing, sailing, ocean racing, and power boating. The University has a wide range of sports facilities available; and additionally the city’s Outdoor Sports Centre has all-weather pitches, cross-country routes, tennis courts and a dry ski slope. The Quays Swimming and Diving Complex offers a wide range of sporting activities. You can also perfect your swing on the city’s municipal golf course or practise winter sports year-round. If you prefer to watch rather than play, you can see Premiership football or world-class cricket. Southampton is a historically important maritime port and has played a significant role on the world stage over the last 500 years. It is still a major centre for maritime activities today; it has four dedicated cruise terminals and hosts the annual Southampton Boat Show, the largest on-water boat show in Europe. Nearby on the Isle of Wight, Cowes Week attracts the world’s best sailors for a week of competitive racing every August.

OUR ESTATE

The Residential Estate provides over 6,500 bed spaces for the University and it is critical that the focus is on the development and maintenance of high quality residences to enhance the residential experience of our students. These are under the direct management of Residential Services, although some other University departments provide some services such as security, energy management and landscape management. The total insurance replacement value for both parts of the estate is £923M of which £721M relates to the Academic portfolio. As is the case with many universities the major expansion of the University of Southampton’s estate took place in the 1960s and 1970s and therefore this is reflected in both the backlog maintenance liability and estate condition. The quality and condition of our estate has, however, been improved significantly over the past few years with around 74% in Condition B. The university is near the end of a significant capital programme of some £250M and is currently planning the next phase of improvement and development. Residential Services employees 75 Residences and Reactive Maintenance and 112 cleaning services. Total revenue currently £34.4M. The Academic Estate in the University’s ownership comprises around 65 hectares of land including some 274,000 square metres of space across approximately 90 buildings. These buildings are a mixture of freehold and leasehold or in some cases are owned by partner organisations with occupation agreements. As is the case with many universities, the major expansion of the University of Southampton’s estate took place in the 1960’s and 1970’s and therefore this is reflected with some in both backlog maintenance liability and estate condition. However, the University has started on a programme of refurbishment and will continue year on year. It has also just completed the development of Chamberlain Hall with the provision of 360 rooms. You will be joining us at an exciting time. As a member of the Residential Services Senior Management Team, you will take the lead in the delivery of key elements of the University’s strategy including residential property acquisitions and disposals, estate management, the planning of and delivery of residential projects and minor works.
