RULES FOR 2026
Handicap System An official handicap is established after a player posts six (6) 9-hole scores or three (3) 18- hole scores to their USGA GHIN profile. There is no 9-hole handicap. There is only an 18- hole handicap, which will be halved for 9-hole events.
If you do not have a handicap and would like to establish one, please contact a Professional Staff Member in the Golf Shop to be added to the GHIN system.
One of the goals of the 9-Hole group is to keep play moving at a steady pace to ensure everyone has an enjoyable round. For most events, you will pick up once you have reached your maximum score. Exceptions to this rule will be announced prior to the event.
Please note that the maximum score on any hole for a weekly tournament is 10. This is different than the maximum score for handicap posting (described below).
Maximum score for handicap posting is calculated as the par of the hole being played, + 2, + any handicap strokes received on that hole at 100%. There is no limit to how many holes this maximum score may be applied to. Example: If the player receives 2 handicap strokes on a par 4, they would have a maximum score of 8. The player adds 4 (par) + 2 + 2 (handicap strokes). Another example of how strokes are calculated: A player with a course handicap of 24 receives one stroke per hole on the first 18 handicap holes (listed on the scorecard as “Women’s Handicap”), plus a second handicap stroke on hole handicaps 1 to 6. This is because strokes are awarded in the order of hole handicaps. For 24 strokes: hole handicaps 1 to 18, followed by hole handicaps 1 to 6, for 24 total strokes. Lower hole handicap numbers generally equate to tougher holes. For this player with a Course Handicap of 24, their maximum score is quadruple bogey (par + 2 + 2 handicap stroke) on holes with a hole handicap of 1 to 6. For hole handicaps 7 to 18, their maximum score is triple bogey (par + 2 + 1 handicap stroke).
To ensure your handicap is accurate, always post your scores after completing a round of golf, no matter how well or poorly you played.
When posting scores, the GHIN system will ask for hole-by-hole scores and automatically correct for your maximum score for each hole. The Golf Shop will post scores for the Wednesday events.
An accurate handicap allows all levels of players to enjoy the game together.
Rounds played where it is “active season” (Florida, etc.) during the winter months also count. Please see the Golf Shop for any questions about posting scores. The maximum 9-hole Course Handicap in a 9-hole weekly event is 42. For players without an official handicap, a maximum Course Handicap of 32 will be used. Handicaps are carried over from one season to the next. In Delaware, only rounds played from April 1st to November 15th count towards your handicap.
WEEKLY EVENTS Members may sign up for weekly events through the Foretees app or by emailing Nate Farnsworth, nfarnsworth@wilmingtoncc.com. In order to qualify for prizes for weekly events, you must turn in a signed and attested scorecard to the Golf Shop after play.
A minimum of eight players constitutes an event.
All scheduled events will be held unless the course is officially closed or there are less than eight players. Winners of the weekly events will be awarded prizes from the 9-Hole Golf Committee. Prize money for each event will depend on whether the event is an individual, partner, or foursome event. All questions on rules and scoring will be answered by the Golf Professional Staff. Questions concerning events will be answered by the 9-Hole Golf Committee.
Any change in weekly events will be ruled by the 9-Hole Golf Committee.
Each player must use the same ball hit from the tee until holed out, replacing only lost balls or when taking relief.
All “whiffs” counts as strokes.
No “mulligans” are allowed.
Putts may NOT be conceded.
In a bunker, a player may not ground the club directly in front or behind the ball or strike the sand during a practice swing. A player may generally touch the sand to steady themselves or help walk through the bunker. A player may move loose impediments within the bunker. A player may ground their club, take practice swings, and remove loose impediments within a penalty area. When taking relief during the play of a hole, the player is always allowed to substitute a new ball or continue play with the original ball. If a player believes that their ball may be lost in an area that is not marked with yellow or red stakes, they may declare to play a “provisional ball” from the location the previous ball was hit. If the original ball is not found, the player will play from the provisional ball and add a stroke penalty for the lost ball and a stroke for the shot made on the provisional ball. If the original ball is found, the player may pick up the provisional ball without any penalty, as the original ball is in play. If a ball is lost, the player returns to the location where the ball was hit originally, drops a ball, and adds a stroke. The penalty for playing a wrong ball is two strokes. The player must return the wrong ball to the location from where it was mistakenly hit, then hit own ball. This includes fairway and green.
SPECIAL RELIEF RULES For every event, the maximum score per hole for tournament purposes is 10. Once a player has taken 9 strokes and not holed out, pick up without finishing the hole, and score the maximum of 10 strokes on the scorecard. A score lower than 10 may be used for handicap posting. The Professional Staff will post Wednesday event scores for handicap purposes when the format permits posting. Relief for 9-Hole golfers hitting into the ponds on the 13th and 18th holes of the North Course and the 3rd and 5th holes of the South Course: If the balls lands in the water on the first attempt, the player may drop the ball no more than two club lengths from the other side of the pond in a line in which the ball entered the pond. Count the stroke into the water, plus one penalty stroke, plus a second penalty stroke for not hitting over the pond.
Example: 3rd shot in the water, 4th out, 5th to carry, and now hitting 6th shot on the other side of the water. Remember to take one penalty stroke for each ball in the water.
Note: For tournament purposes, a player should continue to play to a score of 10. For handicap posting purposes, players should use the maximum score for posting (par + 2 + 100% handicap strokes) on that hole.
A player may deem a ball unplayable and take relief anywhere on the golf course except penalty areas. The options for taking relief are as follows:
-Player may drop and play from location of the previous stroke – one-stroke penalty. -Player may drop within two club lengths of the original ball’s location, no closer to the hole – one-stroke penalty. -Player may draw a line from the hole to where the ball is located and drop anywhere behind that point, keeping this point between you and the hole – one-stroke penalty. If a player is taking relief for an unplayable ball inside a bunker, they have the additional option to drop outside the bunker on the line going straight back from the hole through the spot of the original ball – two-stroke penalty.
REGULAR RELIEF RULES
OUT OF BOUNDS: If you hit your ball out of bounds or lose it (you have 3 minutes to search for your ball before it becomes lost), your only option is to go back to the spot of your previous stroke to play under stroke and distance. If a player thinks their ball may be lost or out of bounds, they may play a Provisional Ball to save time.
REGULAR PENALTY AREA (YELLOW):
1.Play again from the previous spot 2.1.Drop the ball under penalty of one stroke behind the hazard in a straight line, provided the spot at which their ball crossed the edge of the penalty area remains directly between the dropping point and the hole.
LATERAL PENALTY AREA (RED):
1.Option 1 from above – Play the ball from the previous spot 2.Option 2 from above – Drop the ball behind the penalty area in a straight line from the point the ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area. 3.Drop two club lengths from where the ball crossed the edge of the penalty area, no closer to the hole CART PATH: A player is entitled to relief from any man-made obstructions, such as a cart path or irrigation box. The player may take swing or stance relief from the immovable obstruction at the nearest point of relief, no closer to the hole. It is important to take full relief, and be certain the player’s feet are not still on the cart path after dropping. Relief is always taken at the nearest point of full relief, which is not always the “best for playing” point. BUNKERS: If a player is taking relief for an unplayable ball inside a bunker, she has the additional option to drop outside of the bunker on a line going straight back from the hole through the spot of the original ball; two-stroke penalty.
