EXPOSITION AND PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

vs. 1, 2. “Bless the LORD, O my soul: ( ;) and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” Jehovah is worthy of praise. He is worthy, not merely of the formal praise of our lips, but the praise in which our whole being unites, mind, affection and will, “all that is within” us should unite in praise to Him. Jehovah’s “name” stands for his person as revealed, and it is in view of what Jehovah is as He has revealed Himself to us in His word that we should praise Him. First of all, we should praise Him in view of His holi ness, for that is the fundamental fact of His character that is revealed in the Bible (1 John 1:5; Isa. 6:1-3). Therefore, the Psalmist says, “Bless His holy name.” We should praise Him for all His attributes, but first of 'all for His holiness. After praising Him for what He is, we should praise Him for what He does, “all His benefits.” The human heart is prone to forget: the benefits that God bestows upon us, and each of us needs to exhort his own soul not to “forget” these benefits (cf. Psa. 105:5; 106:7, 21; 107:8; Deut. 8:2-4, 10-14; 2 Chron. 32:25; Luke 17:15-18). vs. 3-7. "Who forgiveth all thine iniqui ties; who healeth hll thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; Who crowneth thee with loving kindness and tender mercies; (:) Who satisfieth

thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s ( eagle ). The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment (righteous acts, and judgements) for all that are oppressed. He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts ( doings ) unto the children of Israel.” We should bless Jehovah because of the wonderful things He does for us. The Psalmist cites seven things which he does, for which we should return thanks: (1) “Forgiveth all thine iniquities.” God’s forgiving love is the great theme of. the Bible from the third chapter of Genesis, where sin entered human history, until the last chapter of Revelation, where the work of redemption is accomplished (Psa. 32:5; 51:1-3; 130:8; Isa. 43:25; 55:7; Luke 7:47, 48; Eph. 1:7). His forgiveness covers not only one sin, nor many sins, but "all” our sins (cf. Acts 13:38, 39; Rom. 8:1). When God forgives not one sin is left upon us» “All” our sins, no matter how great and no matter how small, are'blotted out. There is absolutely "no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus.” (2) “Healeth all thy dis eases.” Jehovah not only forgives the sin, but delivers from the consequences of sin, sickness, (cf. Ex. 15:26; Psa. 30:2; 107:17- 20; Num. 12:13; James 5:15). This does not teach that Jehovah will heal every phys ical infirmity. of everybody, or even of every believer. Even men walking in the
