Congratulations to everyone for such a smooth start to the year. The students are settled and are quickly adjusting to their new environment, including: single purpose classrooms; quiet learning streets; learning coaches; and, facility upgrades, including: upgraded lockers on the Secondary Campus; new carpets across the College; and, the efforts of staff to cultivate their rooms as enticing spaces for learning. Staff are working with students to: establish classroom norms; implement College processes; develop effective routines; and, clearly articulate the positive values and behaviour protocols. It is imperative that parents/carers as partners to learning reinforce the importance of: punctuality; uniform; bringing charged devices to school; completing homework; updating diaries with key dates for assessments and other events; and, behaving in ways that reflect our values and high expectations, whilst at school and when representing our College in the local community. This way, we are: truly aligned; have a clear understanding of effective learning environments at school and at home; and, cater for individual differences in a way that does not disrupt the calmness and consistent flow of College operations. It is timely that all parents/carers work with us to meet your child ’ s learning needs and objectives. It is our clear expectation that every student will aim to grow by a full year in every subject they complete. This needs to be reflected in their individual reports at year ’ s end.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PRINCIPAL REPORT
Our teachers have also attempted to contact the families who did not connect on the day. It is imperative that you are involved with your child ’ s learning. Of course, the College understands that parental/carer demands and large and complex. However, as educators and leaders of learning, we are committed to increasing parent/carer involvement as positive role models. As such, please mark in and connect with your child ’ s teachers at the first Learner Review Meetings which will be held on March 12 on the Secondary Campus and March 26 on the Primary Campus. It is our expectation that all families will attend with their children for these meetings. Educational experts clearly articulate that high performing schools rely on parents/carers having a sound understanding of school process to actively promote school identity and belonging, including, safety, trust and optimism as key drivers critical to an effective school partnership. This, and a problem - solving, solution - based approach, are the behaviours that high performing schools need to enhance student performance and success. This is why our correspondence has focussed on key aspects of our operations. We have deliberately targeted a partnership between the school, the student and the parent/carer in our correspondence. The College has communicated information on: our organisational structure; behaviour management plans; how to support learning at home; and, we have surveyed parents/carers via our School Council on participation and times that are most conducive to availability. Leadership at the College is open and transparent and we openly communicate our official accountability data through various forums including our fortnightly Newsletters, Annual Report and School Council. In our first fortnight of school, we have had a successful VCE Parent/Carer Information session and a wonderful start for our new Preps. Our staff have completed a range of professional learning on Differentiation in Learning and the development of
Our enrolment currently stands at 699. We have a full list of 99 staff to begin the year which is a testament to them, their commitment to our College, and, our vision for success. We have maintained a large proportion of smaller classes in order to provide higher levels of personalised learning and support to students. We have particularly targeted Prep and VCE for significantly smaller class sizes. The evidence is very clear that smaller cohorts result in increased student engagement, targeted and differentiated learning and more effective communications. Thank you to the families who booked in and attended in person or online for the important MEET & GREET DAY. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to officially meet your child ’ s Learning Coach. It begins key communications for individual student learning and the planning of learning goals based on student academic data, passions/interests and social/ emotional needs.

Individual Student Learning Plans to prepare for “ Meet & Greet ” and the Learner Coach programs, Neurodiversity training, Compass training (as part of our transition to this platform), CPR, and Diabetes in Schools training. I can assure you all that our staff are committed to our key pillars of academic rigour, high expectation, school pride and community connection. This is reflected in their preparation and participation in: professional training programs; the organisation of their work; pride with the new classrooms; ownership of key learning responsibilities; and, assessment/reporting including feedback from students. We are looking forward to celebrating a range of student successes throughout the year as a result of everyone ’ s commitment and targeted responses to learning. Congratulations to the School Council Fundraising group for organising an awesome welcome back BBQ last Friday on the Primary Campus. In what was a beautiful day, the positive tone amongst everyone and the welcoming of new families was delightful. Let ’ s keep the momentum going through the year as we look forward to future fundraising events that families can actively participate in and make connections. The money raised from last Friday will go to the purchase of new uniforms for Primary and Secondary Inter - School Sport. I would also like to remind any past students that we have our inaugural Alumni gathering on the Secondary Campus on Tuesday, February 27 at 5:30 pm. I encourage all ex - students who attended our College between 2008 - 2023 to come along to reacquaint and connect with each other and the College as we begin this important school tradition. We are looking forward to this event.
Have a great weekend and thank you for your support and cooperation.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter COLLEGE CONNECTIONS WELCOME BACK
FUN IN THE SUN!
The Fundraising Subcommittee's Welcome BBQ & Picnic last Friday was a great success! It was great to see parents/carers, students and teachers from both campuses, and our leadership team come together for the afternoon as a community to start 2024 with such a positive vibe, welcome new families, and to raise over $900 for interschool sports uniforms. Parents Grant and Katrina cooked up a storm on the BBQ; there was bubbles and face painting by Suzi Starface for the younger students and siblings; whilst the older kids had a blast on the bungee run and bungee hoop inflatables. Thank you to Coles Mill Park Lakes, Coles Aurora Village, Woolworths Plenty Valley, Woolworths Mill Park, Woolworths South Morang Central and Woolworths Rivergum who kindly donated vouchers for the BBQ supplies; our Exec Leadership team and Dale and her admin staff for all of their support in the lead up to and assistance on the day: Kitty for helping with our marketing needs; and the parents/carers who helped out as an extra pair of hands on the day.
And lastly massive thank you to our Fundraising team of Jenny, Briohny, Katrina, Karen & Helen for all of their work and time in putting the event all together.
Amanda Farrelly School Council President
The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter AGENCY & ENGAGEMENT
Welcome back to all our students and families,
We have had some of our student leaders review our Bullying Prevention Policy, their insights into this important policy document have been a fascinating read and will be passed on to School Council. Our student leadership team is growing! Congratulations to all the Primary and Secondary students who have been appointed to positions for this year. Secondary SRC & House Captain positions will be finalised by the end of week 3, we thank all the aspiring young leaders who have put their hands up to apply for & take on roles. Our new Learning Coach Program has commenced on both campuses. Students have adjusted well to the transition away from home group. Working in conjunction with the wellbeing team, we are currently organising a lunchtime program to further engage our students and build their sense of connectedness to school and to each other. Students have completed surveys and provided suggestions of possible clubs in their Learning Coach session this week.
It has certainly been a wonderful, calm and engaged start to 2024. Our learners have all really hit the ground running and have adapted well to the changes to their timetable and the multitude of physical changes to their learning spaces that have occurred over the summer holidays. The early student feedback regarding our new glass partitions in our classrooms and the changes to our timetable structure has been really positive, many are saying that they are able to focus more easily, they are completing more work and have noticed a huge reduction in the overall noise level. While it is still early in the year, the Student Agency and Engagement Team have been busy working closely with the wellbeing and leadership team to set up for what we ’ re sure will be a very successful 2024. Below is a snapshot of some of the work our team has been doing:
We are currently tweaking our Behaviour Flow Charts, incident reports and positive values system to support our whole school transition to Compass To set our learners up for the demands of senior secondary school and to maintain the high expectations we have for our students, we will be sending out attendance letters for students in Years 7 - 12 who aren ’ t meeting attendance requirements. It is critical that students maximise their learning time at school. These will be sent out every 3 weeks. In the coming weeks we will be conducting student interviews across the Primary & Secondary Campuses to get some invaluable feedback about the current learning experience for our students here at The Lakes. Student voices are the most important voices at our school and we want them to feel heard and supported.
Mr Zull, Ms. Greaves and I are all looking forward to working with our students, families and the wider school community this year. We will provide updates along the way on our progress. We all firmly believe that The Lakes will continue to be a leader in student agency and that positive, cooperative relationships between students, families and teachers are critical to our young people ’ s success.
Regards,
Mr. Cameron Taylor Learning Specialist - Secondary Agency & Engagement
