Introduction: This lesson follows the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. John was preaching repentance but Jesus needed no repentance. He had no sins to con fess. Neither did He BESSON permit the baptism as EXPOSITION a mere form (Matt. T. C. Horton 21:25). Jesus desired to fulfill all righteous ness, to be subject to all God’s ordi nances. In infancy He was circum cised. Mary observed the rite of purifi cation. Jesus went with Mary and Joseph, to the Temple. At Bethabara the Israelites crossed the Jordan and passed into the Prom ised Land. Joshua succeeded Moses. Now Jesus is to succeed John the Bap tist. Moses died in the wilderness. The Law was superseded by Christ. Moses testified of Joshua whom, God had se-
therefore w ilt worship me, all shall be thinei. (8) And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan; for it is written, Thou Shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. (9) And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from henpe: (10) F or it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: (11) And in their hands they, shall bear thee up, lest any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. (12) And- Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. (13) And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he de parted from him for a season. / lected. John testified of Jesus whom God sent. Jesus was of legal age to enter the ministry. (Num. 4:3; 8:24-26.) The Heavens were opened to Him as they were to Stephen (Acts 7:56). When He hung upon the cross they were closed against Him (Luke 23:44, 45), hut they were opened again (Acts 1 :9). “And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.” In connection with His baptism, the Father speaks from Heaven and testifies that Jesus is His Son. Not a son, but the Son of God. With Him God is well pleased. We have here the manifestation of the ■eternal mystery— the Trinity. Stand ing in the water is the Son; resting upon Him is the Spirit; smiling upon Him and speaking of Him is the Father. Glory streams from the opened Heaven and we behold the blessed, holy, mighty and wonderful Father, Son and S p ir it- Three in One, One in Three. (1) THE TEST OF APPETITE, vs. 1-4. “ Command this stone that it be made bread.”
