Wh ere Life Advances Philippians By Roy L. Laurin

WE CAN HELP YOU W IN YOUTH

A seminary professor recounts God’s sustaining strength and blessing dur ing long illness. By means of answers to questionnaires some 1,200 other sufferers make added contributions to this unique volume. Scripture pas sages, experiences, prayers, poems, brief homilies and anecdotes — all unite to make a book which will bring great blessing and joy to those who are laid aside by weakness of body. 171 pages; cloth; Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, Mich.; $2.50. The subtitle of this volume is A Textbook of the Evidences of the Truthfulness of the Christian Faith for Conservative Protestants. As at tacks on the validity of the Christian faith change from year to year, new answers are forthcoming from its pro ponents. The author ably takes up the verification -of the supernatural, prophecy, and miracles in the Scrip ture record. Not only will the book be useful as a textbook, but it will strengthen the faith of those who, al though conservative in background and training, find themselves at a loss to answer the negations of mod ern agnostics and liberals. 252 pages; cloth; Moody Press, Chicago, 111.; $3.50. This series of messages seeks to present in a popular fashion the vari ous activities of God’s created beings —the angels. The study appears to be based on the English text; the last chapter, for example, is entitled: “The Angel Stops the Clock of Time” v—“Time shall be no more.” What the angel said, however, was “ there shall be delay no longer.” The book may be read with profit. 97 pages; cloth; Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, Mich.; $1.50. The secretary of the Southern Bible Testimony wrote •these studies for The Carolina Watchman, in which they appeared serially from 1946 to 1948. The comments follow full printing of the text to be discussed, and marginal references on every page indicate at once the portion under discussion. These comments, while popular in type, could be prof itably used in connection with fam ily devotions or similar gatherings. 94 pages; cloth; Southern Bible Book House, Travelers Rest, S.C.; $2.00. Protestant Christian Evidences By Bernard Ramm The M inistry of Angels By A. S. Joppie The Epistle to the Philippians By John B. Marchbanks

Originally prepared for radio pre sentation, these popular messages on the Epistle of Paul to the Philippians continue the author’s “ Life” series on New Testament books. The book will be found to be true to the Word in every respect, and Sunday school teachers and others will find it help ful in their- study of the “ Epistle of Joy.” 208 pages; cloth; Van Kampen Press, Wheaton, 111.; $3.00. Variety in Vour Preaching By Faris D. Whitesell and Lloyd M. Perry The preacher who owns this book will keep it near at hand on his desk, for it teems with suggestions on how to vary many different elements in his sermons. Among these ele ments are the aims, Biblical content, subjects, homiletical creativity, propo sitions, key words, transitions, sup porting material, illustrations, ar rangement of materials, presentation, in troductions, conclusions, and preaching programs. The book is well-documented, and bibliographical references conclude each chapter. This is easily the most practical and usable book on preaching we have seen for many a year. Get it, preach ers! 219 pages; cloth; Fleming H. Revell Company, Westwood, N.J.; $2.50. The D estroyer of Jesus By Victor E. Harlow This biography of Herod Antipas will be of interest to all who seek to understand the times of Jesus’ earth ly ministry. The subject is the Herod who ordered the execution of John the Baptist and before whom Jesus appeared during his pre-crucifixion trials. To read the life story of this man is to find the political and social life of Palestine and Jerusalem com ing alive once again. Conservative students of the New Testament will regret that the author reflects the rationalistic findings of the critical school, apparently with out serious consideration of the works of believing scholarship. The con tacts of Herod with John the Baptist and Jesus are included in a chapter entitled, “The Messianic Outbreak.” In general the sources are noted only occasionally. Appendixes are somewhat more fully footnoted: “The Messianic Expectation,” “The Trials Before Herod and Antipas,” “The Je rusalem Residence of Herod Antipas,” and “Deliver Us From [the! Evil.” An index would have made the vol ume more useful. 245 pages; cloth; Modern Publishers, Inc., Oklahoma City, Okla.; $3.50. END.
