GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca MAYOR AGAINST RESIDENCE BED INCREASE Mayor Desjardins has long been critical of the UCPR having to include money in its annual budget to cover deficit operating costs for the PR Residence. He indicated that the counties should encourage the private sector to provide more units, to handle the growing number of seniors in the Prescott-Russell region who need retirement accommodations.

HAVE OUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES FAILED US?

The new Prescott-Russell Residence will have 224 beds when it is built, but the mayor of Clarence-Rockland is not happy about it. “If we’re losing $4 million a year with what we have now,” Mayor Guy Desjardins said during an interview, “how much are we going to lose in the future?” Mayor Desjardins’ question followed after the April 24 session of the United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR). He was the one mayor among the eight who voted against plans for a 224-bed Prescott-Russell Residence to replace the present 146-bed facility. The registered vote followed on recommenda- tions in a report to UCPR council, during its committee of the whole session earlier in the month, on the status of the new PR Residence project. The UCPR received approval from the previous Wynne Liberal provincial govern- ment to increase the number of beds available in the new PR Residence, when planning and construction begins for the facility. The Ford Progressive Conserva- tive government confirmed the increase approval after health ministry officials reviewed the case again. Cost to design and construct a 224-bed PR Residence is projected at $75.7 million. That figure includes the UCPR receiving a provincial government construction loan to cover 85 per cent of the building cost.

Retraite en Action Venez découvrir le programme d’activi- tés de Retraite en Action pour la session printemps-été 2019 et vous inscrire aux Letter to the editor Aside from the fact that I have not seen any meaningful benefit to our community since our local MP Francis Drouin was elec- ted to Parliament, I must express my deep disappointment that after being a rather invisible member on our behalf, Mr. Drouin’s greatest claim to fame will be his notoriety for having infamously triggered the adjournment of an emergency meeting of the Commons Justice Committee; the act of an obsequious party sycophant who obediently pulled the shade down on the sunlight being cast on the debacle that is the SNC Lavalin affair. He insisted he had “heard enough”, dismissing, in the process, any notion that many of those in his riding and across the country had not in fact “heard enough”. If, as he insists, there is no cover up, the action of shutting down this committee is certainly at odds with his “nothing to see here” legerdemain. It’s obvious to most people who can think critically, and who follow politics beyond more than just the sound bites, that this disrespectful action on the part of our MP was nothing short of a strong-arm tactic designed to shut down public discourse, especially when it appeared to be closing in

on the truth. It was, in fact, a slap in the face to all Canadians trusting its government to seek truth as a democratic process. Such is the nature of this government which flies under the banner of “transpa- rency” for all. Additionally, Ms. Amanda Simard betrayed her electorate and defected from the Conser- vatives, because of her party’s stand on cutting one Francophone school as a bud- getary cost savings measure; a decision that left every person who voted her into office out in the cold with no representation whatsoever. A betrayal of trust of enormous proportions, which now relegates her to political anonymity. “Trust” is not a Liberal or Conservative political issue. It’s a transcendent issue which should be inherent in each political candidate regardless of party; a basic human value. Thankfully we are being well served with excellent representation at our local commu- nity level, where it impacts us more directly, but on a broader scale, we deserve so much better than what we have received.

“I don’t have any problem with bringing more beds (unit) here,” Des- jardins said. “Just not to the Prescott- Russell Residence. There are other private nursing homes.” Mayor Robert Kirby of East Hawkes- bury Township, the current UCPR warden, expressed satisfaction with results of the registered vote. UCPR administration and the consultant firm hired as project manager can now go ahead with getting an architectural design for the new facility, which will be located on a new site on Spence Street in Hawkesbury, close to the Hawkesbury & District Hospital. The goal is to have the new facility ready for occupancy by the December 2023. Warden Kirby noted that with the growing number of seniors in the Prescott-Russell region, there is already a two-year waiting list for occupancy at the Residence and demand for senior housing will continue to increase as the region’s population ages. “It’s obvious we need more rooms (at the Residence),” said Kirby. “Even with the increase, there’ll be lots of room for the private sector to help deal with the waiting lists.”

—photo Gregg Chamberlain
