1982 - ENGLAND V AUSTRALIA ENGLAND WIN BY 3 RUNS

In the English first innings AJ Lamb and CJ Tavare helped England to post a score of 284, which was about par for the pitch. The Aussies then replied evenly with half centuries from KJ Hughes, DW Hookes and RW Marsh guiding them to a total of 287. On the third day, England managed a score of 294 thanks to G Fowler, with a score of 65. With a target of 291, the game was very much in the balance. However, NG Cowans with the performance of his career managed to halt the Australian chase - led by RW Marsh and DW Hookes, with those two scoring 62 and 56 respectively - and win the match for England.

1986 - ENGLAND V AUSTRALIA ENGLAND WIN AN INNINGS AND 114 RUNS

On the first day, Australia collapsed to an under-par total of 141, with the only note-worthy performance from DM Jones, with 59. England replied with a strong total of 349, and a superb century from BC Broad (112). With a mountain to climb, the Australian batsmen let their team down with another disappointing score, 194.

1998 - ENGLAND V AUSTRALIA ENGLAND WIN BY 12 RUNS

On the first day, AJ Stewart led England to a par total of 270 with a brilliant century. Australia then managed to get themselves a good first innings lead of 70 with their effort led by SR Waugh. England, determined to make the match turn around, countered with a below-par score of 244. Confident they would win the match; Australia became over cocky and crumbled due to a brilliant bowling performance by DW Headley.

2006 - ENGLAND V AUSTRALIA AUSTRALIA WIN BY AN INNINGS AND 99 RUNS

In December 2006, on the back of a first Ashes win in 18 years, England travelled to Australia. On the first day of the first test, their hopes were shattered after being annihilated for a terrible score of 151. Australia then rammed home the advantage by reaching a total of 419, ML Hayden and A Symonds both scoring 150s. With an impossible task ahead of them, England again collapsed to a score of 161.

2012 - AUSTRALIA V SRI LANKA AUSTRALIA WIN BY AN INNINGS AND 201 RUNS

On the first day of the second test in 2012, the Sri Lankan batting line up had one of their worst innings ever. Not only did they slump to a shocking total of 156, arguably their most celebrated batsman (and one of the best ever), KC Sangakkara retired hurt with an injury. Australia responded with a huge total of 460. Sri Lanka then slumped to a mere 103.
