Vankleek Hill Cougars looking good for playoffs

Onemore week left in the regular schedule for junior C hockey in Eastern Ontario. “It’s a good season,” said Pierre Bourgon, Aigles’ general manager, during a February 12 phone interview. “It’s a real difference from last year. It’s a great turnaround.” The St-Isidore junior C team finished at the bottomof the standings in the 2016-2017 season of the National Capital Junior Hockey League (NCJHL).This season, the Aigles are sinking their talons into the Cumberland Bandits and the North Dundas Rockets for the third-place spot in the final standings, as themid-February end of the regular season nears. Vankleek Hill Cougars MarioMessier, president of the Vankleek Hill Cougars club, is also optimistic about his team’s chance of being in the upper half of the NCJHL’s playoffs list of teams. The Cougars are just below the mid-level of the regular season standings right now but they clipped the Cumberland Bandits 7-6 in overtime, at home, over the February 10 weekend. “That’s one of the top teams in the league,” Messier said. “So we should finish the season strong, at least at .500.” Messier noted that the biggest handicap for the Cougars this season was the loss of several top players from last year. The main reason is that those players now attend school, either university or college inOttawa, and now lack either the time or the incentive for long commutes back to Vankleek Hill, for either practices or games.
Clarence Creek Castors Trouble getting enough players on the bench for games all of the time has also been the main problem for the Clarence Creek Castors, according to head coach Tim Kosch. But the team has managed to hold onto the fourth-place position in the NCJHL standings as the season end approaches, with their latest wins over the February 10 weekend against the Rockets and the South Grenville Rangers. The Panthers fought hard last weekend, but came out with one win and one loss in two home games. Panthers vs. Royals The Panthers squared off against the Rich- mond Royals on February 9 at the Embrun Arena and emerged with a 3-1 victory. The Panthers’ Jeremy Barrie opened the scoring late in the first period with his goal, assisted by teammate Frederik Lafl è che. AndrewBurke then gave his team the 2-0
Perth then opened up the scoring with two back-to-back goals, 40 seconds apart. BlueWings’ Marc-Andre Leblanc was on fire, scoring both these goals for his teambarely a minute apart. Marc Brosseau then narrowed the lead with his goal for the Panthers three minutes later. Entering the third period down by a goal, the Panthers managed to tie the game half- way through. En fin de période, Sean David a profité d’un avantage nu- mérique pour confirmer la victoire des Vikings de Casselman. Vikings 10 contre Aeros 2 Deux jours plus tard, les Vikings domi- naient cette fois les Aeros d’Athens devant les partisans de Casselman, au Complexe JR Brisson. L’équipe locale a remporté la partie avec un pointage de 10 à 2. Les Vikings ont ensuite bombardé le filet des Aeros et ont inscrit, durant cette période, neuf buts. En l’espace d’unemi- nute, Ryan Sabourin, Sean David, Ethan Wensink et Carter Malette ont chacun réussi à trouver le fond du filet. Puis, un peu plus tard dans cette période, Sean David, Carter Malette et Ryan Sabourin ont de nouveau compté pour les Vikings.
David a à nouveau trouvé le fond du filet, donnant ainsi l’avance aux Vikings. En fin de période, c’est Danyk Drouin qui a inscrit un but au pointage de Casselman. BrendanDoherty a confirmé la victoire des Vikings de Casselman au début de la dernière période, en comptant le qua- trième but de son équipe. Le prochain match des Vikings aura lieu au Complexe JR Brisson le 15 février. Ils affronteront les Hawks deWinchester. Trois jours plus tard, ils prendront la route pour jouer contre les Packers d’Arnprior.
