Briefs Outdoor heating device bylaw Russell Township council approved a bylaw for regulating installation and use of outdoor solid fuel-burning devices. The bylaw is not concerned with burn barrels or other means of disposing of trash. It deals with outdoor wood furnaces or boilers that may be part of a farming or other rural operation and in most cases is used for heating water. The bylaw does not apply to existing devices in operation, just to new installations. These wood-burning outdoor furnaces or boilers are not allowed in areas zoned residential. They are limited to properties at least 1.2 hectares or three acres in size with farming the main use for the land. Details on ope- ration of these devices, and permit fees required, is available at the municipal office. – Gregg Chamberlain Water reservoir loan reworked Township council and staff are trying to get the loan on Russell Township’s water reservoir paid down quicker. Council appro- ved a recommendation from administration during its June 29 special session for a refinancing option with the Royal Bank of Canada for a five-year term. Administration noted in a report to council that develop- ment charges on future residential, com- mercial and industrial projects will cover repayment of the loan and there will be no impact on regular water-user rates. – Gregg Chamberlain

16 WWII veterans honored at ceremony

Several WWII veterans were all smiles on July 14, as they all received special com- memorative pins from Glengarry-Pres- cott-Russell Member of Parliament and secretary to theMinister of Veterans Affairs, Pierre Lemieux. More than a hundred family members and friends were on hand in the basement of the Russell Meadows starting at 10am, for the presentation of special pins, which symbolizes the 75 th anniversary of significant milestones. “Every veteran received a pin as well as a certificate,” explained Lemieux. “We all sent thema letter, asking them to be here. We are here to honour the sacrifices they made, so that we could be free.” More than onemillion Canadians served in uniform between 1939 and 1945, an im- pressive number, given the fact that Canada’s population numbered 11million at the time. “Canadians, like you, who served during this conflict, selflessly rallied together in extraordinary ways to defend the right of all people to live in peace and freedom,” explai- ned the Honorable Erin O’Toole, Minister of Veterans Affairs, in the letter sent out to veterans. “On behalf of a grateful nation, please accept (the) certificate and comme- morative lapel pin for your service.” Following the singing of God Save the Queen as well as other songs, the ceremo- ny was concluded with a reception, which
