further than the dramatic welcoming speech, and now she was stuck. She would look a fool, sitting with her mouth wide open, staring blankly through his head. [Click] Lucy bolted upright. Her now lukewarm drink nearly toppled into her lap. She sat, staring at the door, finger on the switch. Her eyes strained through the darkness, as a shape moved across the front of the house. This was it. It had to be. The shadow laughed down its phone. A woman’s voice. Lucy deflated. From her position in the chair, she stared at the strange shadows the shape cast for a good minute, as it paced in front of the house. Once again, the thoughts of what to say, what to do, what things were like, all those months ago, filled her head. After a while, she opened her eyes again. She was still in darkness. She clicked her watch, and peered at it with half open eyes. 2:23. She sighed and fell back into the softness of the chair. But suddenly she sat back upright. Had he come home? Had he gone to bed and just missed her? She walked to the window, and with her hands cupped over her eyes, she stared out of the window. The front garden sat, untouched and quiet. [Click]
