GEORGE STANBURY

“But the ball was still in the rosebush.”

My aim, in the opening, was to allow the reader to establish an intimate connection with Harry, the young protagonist, while conveying his childish enthusiasm for a simple activity. I aim to achieve an effect of linguistic playfulness through the conflation of different grammatical aspects, for example when I use the word ‘slide’ as both noun and verb. This conveys, I hope, the linguistic curiosity of children, as they explore the novelties of language for the first time. Harry’s sense of the Park is conveyed through the use of the capital letter, signifying its almost mythical significance to him.The journey to these places is a key rite of passage for the young, suggesting a transition from innocence to experience.
