From humble beginnings, Fundi's passion for music and community has led her to become an influential figure in the South African music scene. In this exclusive interview with Sound Press magazine, Fundi shares her remarkable journey, the organizations that have shaped her path, and her unwavering commitment to fostering young talent. Sound Press: Fundi, you've become a beacon of inspiration for up-and-coming DJs. Could you share how you started your DJing journey and the driving force behind it? Fundi Mbambani: My DJing journey began amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. An opportunity presented itself through Bridges Academy, where I enrolled in a DJing program powered by Pioneer and founded by Athie Umghido, a passionate DJ and educator. The moment I touched the decks, I realized it was a lifelong connection. I dared myself to explore new horizons and embraced music school with curiosity and passion. After graduation, I joined the Bridges Academy employment pathways program, where my interests expanded to include tourism and working with kids.
This journey led me to Africa Rising Music Conference (ARMC) when I met SJ in Amsterdam during ADE 2022. My love for music has been a binding force, connecting me with amazing people and opportunities, such as the START FROM SCRATCH CLASSES I facilitated in Johannesburg. Sound Press: You're deeply involved with Bridges for Music and Africa Rising Music Conference. What inspired you to become an ambassador for these organizations, and what role do you play in supporting the music community? Fundi Mbambani: Both Bridges for Music and ARMC hold a special place in my heart. As an ambassador, I'm privileged to support the music community, especially youth and aspiring DJs. My involvement includes teaching DJing to young and underprivileged kids in Langa Township. We offer after-school programs that cover mindfulness, piano, dance, singing, and more. I find joy in sharing my self-awareness journey with these young minds. These initiatives, alongside my role at a music academy, enable me to wake up every morning knowing I can inspire young lives from my community. Sound Press: Giving back is a cornerstone of your journey. Could you highlight some initiatives or programs you've been part of to help others learn DJing and navigate the music industry?
