Technical manager Dan Shilling, a recent addition to the team, outlined the venue's development in three stages. This journey began with the renovation of the old Fire Station into the Engine Room bar/bistro. Subsequent phases included an extension and conversion of spaces into studios and, finally, the construction of the adjacent auditorium. This holistic transformation paved the way for The Fire Station's current versatility. The PA setup, featuring HDL 30-A and SUB 9004-AS units, supplemented by HDL 26-A and HDL 35-AS sub units as front fill, has been optimized for the auditorium's unique layout. The real magic lies in the integration of RCF's RDNet network, housing various scenario presets. Expertly tuned by Andy Magee from RCF Engineering Support Group, this network allows seamless adjustments to PA positions, accommodating diverse performance requirements. The venue's adaptability owes much to theatre acoustic specialist Nicholas Edwards from Idibri. Edwards' expertise, coupled with thoughtful design and sound-proofing, ensures optimal acoustics.

His contributions extend to managing sound containment during room transformations, enhancing the auditory experience. By advocating for the house system, Dan Shilling has established The Fire Station as a haven for diverse performances. The RCF system's versatility and expert tuning have made it an essential element of every show, gaining acclaim from crews and sound engineers. Sound engineer Simon Flint, a regular at The Fire Station, commends the system's clarity, coverage, and adaptability. The HDL 30-A line array, combined with HDL 26-A front and lip fills, offers consistent coverage and a balanced mix. The Fire Station embodies the fusion of architectural innovation, cutting-edge technology, and acoustic mastery. Sunderland's cultural resurgence finds expression in this venue, where innovation meets tradition to deliver exceptional performances. As The Fire Station's influence continues to grow, its commitment to excellence and versatility will undoubtedly shape Sunderland's cultural landscape for years to come.
