Music is a lifestyle for local hip hop artist Rose Mary

Overtaken by inspiration, Branch spends most of her free time writing lyrics - on the bus, at home, at work, she spins everyday encounters into verses. In an effort to be more in touch with her surroundings, and therefore her inspiration, she turned off her cell phone more than six months ago, and hasn’t turned it on since. “I don’t want any distractions. I’ve been crafting my brain, you know, and taking time out to pay attention to my surroundings,” she says. “All of that is in my music.”

Most people have little or no idea what they want to do with their lives during their early teen years. But Antanisha Branch - Rose Mary, to fans - made music her main priority at 13 years old. Now 19, her dedication has only increased, and with it, her skill. She remembers when she rst recognized music as a calling. “I’d be writing and give myself goosebumps, it’s like a feeling that goes through my body,” she says. “It’s something that comes over me when I’m writing. When I rst got that feeling, that’s when I knew that I needed to take [music] seriously.”

These bars from “Oh My” back up her claim:

Like I ain’t ever showed ‘em just how much I was determined / I swear I need that throne I got no time to be subversive.
